Atlanta Braves Predicted to Trade Dom Smith for Mariners’ Outfielder

The Atlanta Braves became the first team in MLB this season to reach 20 wins after their win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday afternoon. Atlanta has yet to lose a series and is on pace to win 112 games this season.

This is a team that should be looked at as World Series contenders, which means they could be going all-in this season with player additions and notable trades. Dom Smith has been one of the best additions to this Braves team, but a recent trade proposal by SI.com’s Ethen Hutton features the Braves linking with the Seattle Mariners in a player-swap deal that would send Dom Smith to Seattle for Dominic Canzone. Is this a trade the Braves should consider?

Braves-Mariners Trade Prediction Swaps Dominic’s

Dom Smith has played so well when he’s been in the lineup for Atlanta, but he doesn’t provide much defensive value, and is certainly a hitter that’s due for some negative regression. It’s no knock to Dom, but he’s now on the radar of opposing pitchers and their scouting game plan.

Here’s why Hutton believes this trade idea could work:

“In the proposed deal, Atlanta and Seattle agree to a simple player-for-player swap, a deal that fills massive needs for both sides. Canzone is set to join a star-studded lineup, featuring the likes of Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr., offering a reliable lefty bat in the outfield. On the other side, Dominic Smith is moved to the Mariners, who have sought out a solid bat at either corner of the infield to support the likes of Julio Rodriguez and others. ”

Dominic Canzone is a 28-year-old right fielder with experience at both corner outfield spots. The Braves inked Mike Yastrzemski to a $20 million + deal this offseason, and he’s struggled in his at-bats. As for Canzone’s 2026 campaign, he’s hitting .279 with three home runs, 12 RBI, and an OPS+ of 142 in 61 AB’s.

Should the Braves Offload Dom Smith?

Unfortunately, the Braves don’t have that many tradeable assets on their current roster unless they are going to dip into their farm system, which I doubt they want to do, so that makes Dom Smith stand out as a potential trade candidate.

Dom Smith last received an at-bat on Saturday against the Phillies. In 63 AB’s this season, Smith has four home runs, 17 RBI, and a slugging percentage of .571.

It’s an incredible start for a player signed to a minor league deal just weeks before the season began, but how feasible is it for those numbers to be sustained?

Dominic Canzone provides a little higher upside because of his defensive versatility and youth.

While the Braves might not need to make any trades at the moment, once the summer months roll around, expect Atlanta to be a big player and featured in several rumors.
