The Houston Astros may have just been reminded of how important it is to have a deep roster and how bad it would be to trade Isaac Paredes right now.
The Astros may lose one of their most important players to an injury just days after trade rumors about Paredes started to spread.
Jeremy Peña Injury Changes Astros’ Equation
Shortstop Jeremy Peña broke a finger while getting ready to play for the Dominican Republic in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. A ground ball took an awkward bounce and struck Peña’s hand as he fielded it.
The 28-year-old initially stayed in the game but exited shortly afterward when pain in his right hand worsened. He will need additional tests to determine the severity of the injury.
Houston’s timing couldn’t be worse. Peña had just played in the 2025 All-Star Game and is still one of the club’s most important defensive players in the middle.
More importantly, his injury shows right away that the argument, coming from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, that Houston needs to trade Paredes just to clear up an infield logjam, is wrong.
That logjam goes away as soon as injuries come into play.
People thought the Astros’ infield was crowded before spring training. Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and Christian Walker are also in the group with Peña. Yordan Alvarez is the designated hitter.
Houston has looked into trading Paredes all offseason because of that depth. But Peña’s injury shows how risky it is to make a move just to make the roster easier.
If Peña had to miss any significant time at the start of the season, Houston would need to be able to move players around on the infield. Paredes could take on a bigger role, which could mean spending more time at third base or moving other players around the diamond.
Depth that used to look like a luxury now looks like safety.
Bad News for Red Sox Trade Hopes
For fans of the Boston Red Sox who were hoping trade talks could start up again, Peña’s injury probably makes things more difficult.
People have often said that Boston could be a good place for Paredes to land in a deal that could also include outfielder Jarren Duran. But reports say that talks between the two teams have slowed down in the last few weeks.
Houston has even less reason to hurry now.
The Astros might prioritize roster stability over a trade that doesn’t clearly make the team better because they don’t know whether Peña will be available, and the regular season is coming up.
It’s funny that what once looked like too many players in the infield could now be one of Houston’s biggest strengths.
For months, people outside the Astros organization have said they needed to move Paredes to fix a roster problem. But injuries are a normal part of a 162-game season, and they often change decisions before Opening Day even comes.
Peña’s injury is the most recent reminder.
What looked like a problem with Houston’s roster might actually be one of the team’s best defenses.
