Analyst Urges Bills to Bring Back Controversial WR in Surprising Move

The Buffalo Bills traded for DJ Moore this offseason, but the team is expected to pursue more wide receiver help.

Buffalo has been searching for a true No. 1 receiver since the team traded away Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. Although Diggs had some controversies in Buffalo, he was a productive No. 1 receiver.

With that, NESN NFL analyst Aaliyan Mohammed believes the Bills should look to sign Diggs in free agency and bring him back to Buffalo to help bolster the offense.

“The Bills desperately need help at receiver, and even if they draft one early, Diggs could be a great asset,” Mohammed wrote. “The Bills added DJ Moore this offseason. But have not made any other big moves to help Allen in the passing game. Diggs and Allen put up monster numbers together. All four of Diggs’ Pro Bowl nods have come with Allen as his trigger man.

“Diggs was also a First-Team All-Pro with Allen, leading the league in receptions and receiving yards in 2020. Diggs may not be that player anymore, but on a cheaper deal, he could be an elite player to pair with Moore. Those two leading the receiving corps would be a massive upgrade from last season. … Right now, Diggs needs a team, and Allen needs a No. 1 receiver. Diggs returning to Buffalo could be a great move for both sides.”

Diggs spent four years in Buffalo and was a productive No. 1 receiver. Whether or not he would want to return to the Bills is uncertain, but he would help bolster the offense.

With the Patriots last season, he recorded 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Diggs Claims His Time With Bills Was Over

Diggs helped Josh Allen and the Bills’ offense reach another level. But after four years with the team, it felt like a change of scenery was needed.

After the Bills traded Diggs to the Texans, the star wide receiver claimed he was the one who wanted a change.

“None of those teams wanted to get rid of me,” Diggs said in an interview with GQ Sports. “Things had to shake because I kind of wanted them to shake.”

Diggs, meanwhile, claimed his mental status wasn’t the best in the final year in Buffalo which is why he wanted a change of scenery.

“Last year, I was in the worst mental space I’ve been in since I’ve been in the league,” Diggs added. “If I’m not in a good space, obviously that’s not the best for me. So that’s when things had to start shaking out.”

Diggs is a four-time Pro Bowler.

Buffalo Could Draft a WR

Although Mohammed believes the Bills should pursue a reunion with Diggs, Buffalo could add more wide receiver help in the draft.

The Bills traded for Moore, and despite that, ESPN Bills reporter Alaina Getzenberg said Buffalo will likely look to draft at least one wide receiver.

“Not quite. Trading for Moore gives the Bills flexibility to not have to address wide receiver in the first round and prioritize other needs. But it does not mean the position won’t and shouldn’t be considered in the early rounds,” Getzenberg wrote. “Help is still needed from both a depth and talent perspective. And president of football operations and general manager Brandon Beane said Buffalo is still open to a receiver in the first round. The Bills have a variety of positions to address in the draft. And trading away their second-round pick limits some options. But a receiver in early rounds shouldn’t be ruled out.”
