Alex Hall Grew Up in Switzerland and Began Skiing at a Young Age With the Support of His Family

Hall grew up in the Zurich area, and he started skiing at a young age. But, there weren’t a lot of good spots to ski where he was growing up.

“Hall, his older brother Aldo—a snowboarder—and their buddies needed a place to craft their tricks,” Time magazine notes in a Friday, February 6 feature on him. “So, with the blessing of his father Marcus, a professor in the evolutionary biology and environment studies department at the University of Zurich, and mother Elena Conti, an evolutionary biology professor at the school who until recently ran its botanical garden, Hall built one in his own backyard, out of anything he could find, really.”

“Hall’s gold medal–winning slopestyle run at Beijing 2022 is emblematic of who he is as a skier,” the Olympics state on their official website. “On his first run down the course, Hall took a creative approach, choosing a unique mid-run jump line that none of the other 31 competitors even considered, tricking on and off the knuckle in the wave section of the second jump.”

They add, “On the final jump, he debuted a new trick, a right double-cork 1080 bring back, a stylish and technically demanding spin that encapsulated his approach to skiing, prioritizing creativity and style above all else. The run earned him the top score and the Olympic gold medal.”
