Following the depressing finish to the 2025 college football season for Ty Simpson and the Alabama Crimson Tide, the quarterback decided to enter his name into the 2026 NFL Draft.
After losing to the Indiana Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl by a final score of 38-3, all eyes were on Simpson’s decision. Would he return to school for another season or opt to take his talents to the professional level?
Simpson declared for the draft.
While he has declared himself eligible for the draft, there is still a chance he could change his mind. Simpson is being pursued by one top-tier ACC football program to return and he’s being offered a massive amount of NIL money to do so.
According to a report from Colin Gay of the Tuscaloosa News on January 11, the Miami Hurricanes are hoping to convince Simpson to return to college and transfer. They need a quarterback with Carson Beck leaving town and have missed out on the top names in the transfer portal.
“According to a source close to Simpson, Miami sent the Alabama quarterback an offer to be the highest-paid player in college football at $6.5 million,” Gay reported. “The Hurricanes’ official offer started at $4 million and quickly ballooned to $5 million within minutes before reaching the current offer.”
Ty Simpson Would Keep the Miami Hurricanes Competitive
This news breaks as Miami prepares to face off against the Indiana Hoosiers for a national championship on Monday night next week.
Beck has performed well during the 2025 season. He has done exactly what the Hurricanes paid him handsomely to do. Simpson could do the same thing.
During the 2025 season at Alabama, Simpson put together a strong year. He completed 64.5 percent of his pass attempts for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Simpson also ran for 93 yards and two more scores.
At one point this season, Simpson was being talked about as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate. His draft stock was also skyrocketing, with some believing he could end up being a top-10 pick.
That hype has died off some, although Simpson is still projected to be drafted either in the first or second round by most.
Returning to College Could Be Best for Simpson’s Career
Before Simpson made his decision to enter the NFL Draft, he received strong advice from fellow Alabama Crimson Tide star quarterback A.J. McCarron.
“I think Ty’s gotta come back,” McCarron said. “I think if he enters, he’s a seventh-round…maybe five-to-seven.”
McCarron continued on, making his advice to Simpson even more clear.
“I think he has no choice but to come back. If he asked me for advice, I’d say, ‘Brother, you gotta come back,’” he said.
Despite the advice, Simpson decided to go ahead and plan the move to the NFL. However, another year in college could help him prepare for professional football more.
There is no telling what decision Simpson will make. Leaving Alabama would also be a difficult choice to make after declaring for the draft.
Being offered $6.5 million to play one more season of college ball would be difficult to pass on. Playing that season with a Miami team who should be a contender next season would make the opportunity even more intriguing.
