Alabama May Be Quietly Building Something Scary on the Defensive Line

The future of Alabama football in the trenches is beginning to take shape.

With official visit season rapidly approaching, the Crimson Tide is building serious momentum along the defensive line in the 2027 recruiting cycle. According to reporting from Bama247 writer Brett Greenberg, Alabama’s coaching staff continues to position itself strongly for several of the nation’s top defensive line prospects.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer, general manager Courtney Morgan, defensive line coach Freddie Roach, and outside linebackers coach Christian Robinson have already landed a pair of defensive front commitments. Still, the Tide’s work is far from finished.

Alabama currently holds six total commitments in the 2027 class, including two important additions in the trenches with three-star defensive lineman AJ Pauley and three-star WOLF defender Stevan Thornton III.

AJ Pauley Remains One of Alabama’s Biggest Priorities

Pauley announced his commitment to Alabama during A-Day weekend after months of strong communication with the Crimson Tide staff.

The Mobile native has quickly become one of the most important defensive line pieces in the class despite his current three-star ranking. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound prospect developed a strong relationship with Freddie Roach throughout the recruiting process, which ultimately helped Alabama separate from the pack.

Pauley still has an official visit scheduled with the Florida State Seminoles in June, but Alabama appears to be firmly in control of his recruitment heading into the summer.

The Crimson Tide also expects Pauley back in Tuscaloosa later this month for an official visit.

Stevan Thornton III Gives Alabama Versatility Off the Edge

Thornton’s commitment came as somewhat of a surprise in late April following a spring visit to Tuscaloosa.

The Georgia standout exploded onto the recruiting scene after a dominant junior season in which he recorded 91 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and 8 sacks. His recruitment surged this spring with offers from programs including the Georgia Bulldogs, Tennessee Volunteers, and Arkansas Razorbacks.

At 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, Thornton gives Alabama another athletic pass-rushing option for the future.

Like Pauley, do not let the recruiting rankings fool you; Thornton is an elite athlete with tremendous upside.

Alabama Pushing For Elite Targets

One of the biggest names Alabama fans should monitor moving forward is four-star defensive lineman Mitchell Turner.

Bama247 previously logged a Crystal Ball prediction in favor of Alabama for the Mississippi standout, who is currently viewed as one of the top defensive linemen in the country.

The Crimson Tide was Turner’s first SEC offer, and that relationship appears to be significant for the Turner family. Alabama has consistently prioritized him throughout the recruiting process, including multiple visits to Tuscaloosa this offseason.

Turner is scheduled to officially visit Alabama from May 29-31 before taking trips to Ole Miss, Texas, and Mississippi State later this summer.

Freddie Roach continues to play a major role in this recruitment, and Alabama reportedly remains in a strong position.

Alabama is also heavily involved with elite prospects such as Antwan Jackson and KJ Green, who we will have more on later at Heavy on Alabama.

Alabama Building Momentum in the Trenches

Alabama’s recruiting momentum along the defensive front continues to build entering a critical summer stretch.

With Pauley and Thornton already committed, plus growing confidence surrounding targets like Mitchell Turner and others.

If Freddie Roach and Alabama can capitalize during official visit season, this group could quickly become one of the strongest position classes in the country.
