Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady has received head coaching interest before, and that trend continues this year.
The Baltimore Ravens, which fired longtime head coach John Harbaugh on Jan. 6, have requested to interview Brady for their head coach position, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Bills travel to Jacksonville on Jan. 11 to square off against the Jaguars (1 p.m., CBS) in the Wild Card playoff round. Brady can interview with the Ravens after the game is played, according to Rapoport.
Brady joined the Bills as the quarterbacks coach in 2022, but quickly climbed the ladder. He was named the interim offensive coordinator after Ken Dorsey was fired during the 2023 season.
The Bills have had one of the best offenses in the NFL during Brady’s tenure. They’ve never ranked lower than 1oth in yards or points and produced the best rushing offense in the NFL this season behind running back James Cook and quarterback Josh Allen.
Cook won this year’s NFL rushing title by running for 1,621 yards and 12 touchdowns on 309 attempts. He averaged a league-high 95.4 rushing yards per game. Allen added 579 yards and a team-high 14 touchdowns while running backs Ray Davis and Ty Johnson each ran for 200 yards or more.
Joe Brady’s Coaching History Before the Buffalo Bills
Brady became well known in 2019 as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach for Louisiana State University.
Behind quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, the Tigers averaged 48.4 points and 401.6 passing yards per game. Burrow threw for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns on the way to a national championship. The Cincinnati Bengals selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
That season catapulted Brady onto the NFL’s radar. Head coach Matt Rhule and the Carolina Panthers hired him as their offensive coordinator in 2020.
During his two seasons in Carolina, the Panthers didn’t have the success that Brady achieved in college. They were amongst the worst offenses in the NFL, ranking 29th and 31st in passing yards and touchdowns, respectively, during Brady’s final season.
Brady Has Been Connected to Other Teams
This is the second consecutive season that Brady has received interest for head coaching openings around the NFL.
After last season, Brady interviewed for the Jaguars’ opening but lost out to current head coach Liam Coen. He was connected to the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets at the time, as well.
On Dec. 31, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano discussed Brady’s head coaching candidacy, and both had interesting takes. Graziano connected Brady to Burrow and the Bengals if they were to move on from head coach Zac Taylor. However, at the time, Graziano didn’t expect that to happen.
Fowler insisted that Brady would garner interviews during the hiring cycle, but didn’t consider him a “runaway prospect,” saying:
“One thing this cycle has in spades is defense. It’s lacking a bit on offense. I’m expecting Kansas City offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to be in the mix in Tennessee (and possibly elsewhere). Seattle offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Buffalo offensive coordinator Joe Brady have earned interview chances but aren’t considered runaway prospects at this point.”
