49ers’ Mac Jones Gets Clear Answer From Kyle Shanahan on Trade Future

During the 2025 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers had to lean heavily on veteran quarterback Mac Jones at times due to Brock Purdy‘s injury issues. Jones, who had been written off by many, played well in place of Purdy, which led to speculation about the one-time Pro Bowler’s future.

The consensus seemed to be that the 49ers would trade Jones in the offseason to capitalize on his increased value, but he has yet to be moved, even after the first day of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The 49ers’ brass decided to trade out of the first round, which prompted questions from the media about why that decision was made and whether Jones’ future with the team was in doubt.

“Pretty sure. Yeah, I’d be real surprised if he’s not,” Shanahan on Jones’ immediate future with the 49ers. “It also really surprised me that no one came and offered something like today. But the fact that no one did, doesn’t make me think someone’s going to do something tomorrow, and his value probably already passed anyway.”

Shanahan seems to believe that Jones will be with the 49ers to start the 2026 campaign as Purdy’s primary backup, which is a pretty good setup for the storied NFL franchise.

However, he also opens the door for something going down during the rest of the NFL Draft, which will get back underway on Friday.

At this point in the NFL offseason, most teams have already addressed their quarterback situation and have a good idea who will be under center and who their backups will be, but that can change at a moment’s notice.

Brock Purdy Opens Up on Mike Evans Signing With 49ers

The 49ers headed into the NFL offseason with the intention of upgrading the wide receiver position, with a few intriguing options on the open market in free agency.

Ultimately, the 49ers were able to convince veteran star wide receiver Mike Evans to leave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are the only teams he’s played for during his professional career, to head to the Bay Area.

Purdy recently reacted to his team signing Evans in free agency, recalling hearing the news while working out at George Kittle‘s house, via NBC Sports Bay Area.

“I was working out at George’s place and got the news that we just signed Mike Evans,” Purdy said of the signing of the veteran wideout. “Up in George’s weight room, he’s got a Mike Evans jersey, so I was like, ‘Alright, sick. I get to throw to this guy.’”

Purdy will now have a legitimate No. 1 option at wide receiver, one of the most consistent players at the position in the NFL.

“As a quarterback, you dream of those kinds of situations,” Purdy said. “With his size, it’s different.”

It’ll be interesting to see the kind of impact Evans can make in San Francisco and whether he can help the team become a powerhouse on offense in 2026.
