A major concern (outside of the injuries) for the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the 2026 NFL season is whether the team improved its pass rush this offseason. Last season, the Niners struggled to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks after losing Nick Bosa to a season-ending injury.
The 49ers are hoping that Bosa and Mykel Williams, along with drafting Romello Height, can be enough to uplift their sack total from last season. Ahead of San Francisco’s first preseason game on Aug. 13 against the Tennessee Titans, 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris shared his thoughts on Bosa and how he’s looking post-injury.
“[Bosa has] played a lot of football and he’s got a lot of bank reps in his history, not just with the Niners, but in football in general,” Morris said (h/t 95.7 The Game). “He’s a very smart, very unique player; he’s been able to be out there to get all the mental reps and do a lot of those things. He’s starting to get his physical activity increased when it comes to individual work and things of that nature.”
Before his injury, Bosa played 119 total snaps, leading to an 85.8 overall PFF defensive grade. Moreover, he generated 10 total pressures as a pass rusher, two sacks, six hurries, two QB hits, and one forced fumble. Meanwhile, against the run, he recorded eight solo tackles.

Moreover, Morris noted what’s next for Bosa in training camp and the preseason as the player prepares for the 2026 NFL season.
“So, it’s just about getting his body right and getting ready to play football,” Morris added. “I feel really good about where he’s going to be and what he’s going to be able to do for us.
“He’s a special player, and when you play around special players, you make sure they know you’re playing around them. He’s smart enough to pick those things up and be able to go do those things at any time.”
If the 49ers want to have an impactful defense this season, they will need a healthy Bosa. Anything short of that could see the Niners struggle to get to the quarterback once again on defense.
Does Nick Bosa Have One of Worst Contracts in NFL?
Bosa will look to have a dominant season and prove he’s worth the money the 49ers are paying him. Nonetheless, Bosa will turn 29 during the 2026 NFL season, and Grant Cohn of 49ers on SI says the veteran pass rusher has one of the worst contracts in the NFL.
“Nick Bosa got $122.5 million guaranteed from the Niners,” Cohn said in a July 5 video on his YouTube channel. “Then T.J. Watt got $108 million guaranteed. I think the worst contracts in the league are Watson, Bosa and T.J. Watt. I think something similar has happened with Bosa and Watt. They’ve both kind of fallen off since they got the mega-big bucks.
“Both guys were paid as if they’re Myles Garrett, but they’re not. And with Bosa, his career trajectory is following his brother’s. He’s better than his brother. His brother never won Defensive Player of the Year and wasn’t a first-team All-Pro.”
