The 2026 NHL Draft will be one of the most exciting events in the hockey offseason. The draft gives teams an opportunity to select the best prospects from the various leagues around the world. The first round, in particular, will generate the most expectation, as future superstars will likely emerge from this group.
So, let’s jump into the specifics of the 2026 NHL Draft, focusing on the date, venue, and format for this highly anticipated event.
2026 NHL Draft: Date and Venue
The 2026 NHL Draft will take place on June 26 and 27 in Buffalo, New York. Teams and prospects will gather at the KeyBank Center, home of the Buffalo Sabres, to learn the destination of this year’s crop of rising talents.
The first round will take place on June 26. A major televised event features all 32 picks in the opening round, with fans getting an opportunity to meet their favorite teams’ new prospects.
Rounds 2 through 7 will take place on June 27, with a much quicker announcement of selections taking place.
It’s also worth pointing out that draft-day trades could hold up the announcements. While they are not unheard of, draft-day trades aren’t generally common.
The expectation is that the 2026 NHL Draft will be “decentralized.” In 2025, the NHL held a format in which prospects and their families gathered at the venue, with each team’s respective organizations remaining in alternate locations.
One of the major criticisms was that the overall process was too slow. That’s why this season the league looks to move back to a more traditional format.

Draft Format and Eligibility
The 2026 NHL Draft will consist of seven rounds, with 32 picks per round. In theory, each team has one pick per round. However, trades change that dynamic. Some teams may have multiple picks in a single round, while others may have none.
The first round is subject to the NHL Draft Lottery. The lottery consists of the 16 non-playoff teams having a chance to move up or potentially move down from their final positions in the standings.
For example, the Vancouver Canucks finished last overall in the 2025-26 season. Nevertheless, the team does not automatically get the first-overall pick. The Canucks have a 25.5% of winning the first pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Per the rules, teams can only move up ten spots. So, the only teams that have a chance for the top pick are 1 through 11. Teams 12 through 16 can move up 10 spots, but have no shot at the top pick.
As for Vancouver, they can keep the first pick or, at worst, move down two spots. Regardless, the Canucks have a lock on at least the third overall pick.
Players born between January 1, 2006, and September 15, 2008, may enter the 2026 NHL Draft. Also, undrafted and non-North American players born in 2005 may enter the draft. Players drafted in 2024, but who did not sign with their respective teams, may also re-enter.
More information will be forthcoming in the following weeks. With the NHL Draft Lottery on May 5, plenty of excitement should be on the way.
