2026 NFL Free Agency News: Huge Rule Change, Top Players

The 2026 NFL free agency negotiating window opens Monday, and it comes with a game-changing twist. For the first time in NFL free agency history, NFL teams can now conduct one video or phone call — lasting up to one hour — with up to five prospective NFL free agents, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

Pelissero noted the Steelers-proposed rule shift was “quietly approved last spring,” and with free-agent buzz building across the NFL landscape, the 2026 NFL free agency period is shaping up to be unlike anything we’ve seen before.

In previous years, communication during the negotiating window was limited through players’ agents. Now, NFL free agents will actually get to talk directly to coaches and front-office personnel before “making life-changing decisions,” Pelissero added.

The player’s certified agent must still be a participant on the call, he noted. However, this is a massive shift in how NFL free agency business gets done.

2026 NFL Free Agency News and Start Time

The NFL free agency timeline has two key dates every football fan needs to know. The negotiating window opens at noon ET on Monday, March 9. That’s when clubs can contact certified agents of prospective unrestricted free agents and begin hammering out contract terms.

The official signing period then begins at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 11, when players can actually put pen to paper. There are a few teams with a ton of cap space looking to spark a rebuild, and contenders are aiming to add one NFL free agent piece in hopes of a Super Bowl run.

Top NFL Free Agents Available in 2026

The 2026 NFL free agent class is loaded with talent across multiple positions. Here are some of the biggest NFL names expected to hit the open market:

  • Trey Hendrickson, Edge: The top-ranked free agent in the class, per ESPN’s Matt Bowen. Hendrickson racked up 17.5 sacks in both 2023 and 2024 for the Cincinnati Bengals and is the type of pass rusher who can be a force multiplier for any defense. Injuries slowed him in 2025, but teams believe he can still be a difference-maker.

  • Tyler Linderbaum, C: Just 26 years old, Linderbaum is widely considered to be perhaps the best center in the NFL. Now he’s set to be one of the most sought-after NFL free agents at any position this offseason. The center market has dried up considerably over the weekend, and he might be in line for a serious payday.

  • Jaelan Phillips, Edge: Phillips tallied 5.0 sacks across 17 regular-season games in 2025 — including 2.0 after being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. Over his first five NFL seasons, he’s posted 28 sacks in 63 games, and he’s still just 26.

  • Alec Pierce, WR: Pierce hauled in 47 catches for 1,003 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2025 for the Indianapolis Colts, per ESPN. At 26, he’s a vertical weapon any offense would love to add.

  • Mike Evans, WR: Evans managed just 368 receiving yards in an injury-plagued 2025. He snapped an 11-year streak of topping the 1,000-yard mark with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At 33, he remains a proven red-zone threat when healthy.

  • Kenneth Walker III, RB: The reigning Super Bowl MVP rushed 221 times for 1,027 yards and added 31 receptions for the Seattle Seahawks. He’s just 25 and should have plenty of teams bidding for him.

  • Wan’Dale Robinson, WR: Robinson broke out with 92 receptions for 1,014 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2025 with the New York Giants. The 25-year-old has been linked to multiple teams, including the Tennessee Titans and his former coach, Brian Daboll.

What This Means for NFL Free Agency in 2026

The new rule change is “subtle,” as Pelissero said, but it could reshape how deals get done across the NFL. Players making life-altering decisions now get to hear directly from the coaching staffs and organizations recruiting them. That personal connection could be the difference between a player choosing one team over another.

Combined with a historic free agent class headlined by elite pass rushers, a gigantic salary cap, and blue-chip names at every position group, the 2026 NFL free agency period has all the makings of one of the most explosive markets in recent memory.
