Two men were charged after a drug bust uncovered a rooster fighting operation in southwest suburban Joliet.
Rolando Rodriguez-Gasca and Fortino Rodriguez, both of Joliet, faced multiple animal cruelty and drug charges, city officials announced at a press conference Thursday.
“What began as a focused narcotics investigation ultimately uncovered a much larger and very deeply concerning operation,” Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans told reporters. “Because of the diligence training and coordination of our personnel, we were able to address both the drug activity and the inhumane treatment of animals.”
Rodriguez-Gasca, 39, and Rodriguez, 51, were arrested after officers executed a search warrant related to narcotics Wednesday morning in the 400 block of Meeker Avenue, Evans said.
While officers searched the residence, they found roosters caged in the backyard and inside along with “equipment that was consistent with an illegal animal fighting operation.”
In addition to cocaine and money, authorities recovered 29 animals from the home including roosters, hens, chicks and a young terrier puppy, officials said. Several of the roosters showed physical alterations consistent with animal fighting. And investigators also recovered metal spurs, straps, medications, and transport containers — all equipment linked to fighting operations.
“The dedication demonstrated in this case reflects our commitment as a department,” Evans said. “We remain focused on protecting our community, holding individuals accountable, and ensuring the safety and well-being of both our residents and the animals within our city.”
The Will County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation and have emphasized how animal abuse can be a public safety issue.
“Animal cruelty is not an isolated act it is often a warning sign of broader violence,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a press release. “The same individuals who harm defenseless animals frequently pose a danger to people as well.”
Earlier this month, the sheriff’s office offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest after six dogs were found dead in a ditch near Crete.
