The first statuette at the 2026 Academy Awards hasn’t even been handed out, but Sinners has already made Oscar history.

The Ryan Coogler horror film is the most nominated movie ever, with a grand total of 16 nods, including for Best Picture and Best Director, as well as in multiple acting categories.

With its impressive list of nominations, Sinners blew past the other three films that had previously held the most-nominated title.

Before this years Oscar nominations were announced, three films were tied for the most nominations in a single year: La La Land (2016), Titanic (1997), and All About Eve (1950). Each received 14 nominations.

Titanic won in 11 of its 14 nominated categories, putting it on the list of movies with the most Oscar wins. All About Eve won in six categories, as did La La Land. Titanic and All About Eve both won best picture. (La La Land, infamously, did not.)

Twelve movies have been nominated in 12 categories:

Gone with the Wind (1939)

From Here to Eternity (1953)

Mary Poppins (1964)

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)

Forrest Gump (1994)

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Chicago (2002)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

The Shape of Water (2017)

Oppenheimer (2023)

Emilia Pérez (2024)

Which movies have won the most Oscars?

Being nominated in a lot of categories does not necessarily translate into a heap of awards. The Turning Point (1977) and The Color Purple (1985) were both nominated 11 times. But each film went home empty handed at the end of the night.

The most Oscars won by any movie is 11. Three films have hit that record. In addition to Titanic, Ben-Hur (1959) was nominated in 12 categories and won in 11. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) won in all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It’s the biggest sweep in Oscars history.

How will Sinners fare at this year’s Oscar ceremony? The results are anyone’s guess, but the movie does face stiff competition in several categories.

One Battle After Another is the favorite to win in several of the major categories, including Best Picture and Best Director, according to online prediction market platform <a href=”https://kalshi.com/hub/oscars-2026″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Kalshi. And Timothée Chalamet will likely walk away with Best Actor over the other nominees, including Sinners’ Michael B. Jordan. But Sinners odds are much better in the Best Original Screenplay category, where it’s the favorite.
