‘Ratatouille 2’: Brad Bird Rules Out a Sequel

Over the years, Pixar has tallied numerous big wins. The animation studio’s success and longevity can be partly tied to the creatives behind the flicks, as well as the visionaries who know when it is time to return for a sequel. Sequels are part of the studio’s bread and butter, but not every creation gets one. Fans have been clamoring for a follow-up to Ratatouille to no avail. The film’s director just revealed why a sequel has never happened and probably never will.

Brad Bird is the mastermind behind Ratatouille. The famed director recently sat down for a chat and openly discussed the famed animated movie’s legacy, and how fans have reacted to the lack of a follow-up on Remy. In a chat with <a href=”https://collider.com/ratatouille-2-sequel-not-happening-pixar-brad-bird/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Collider, Bird said that Pixar has floated the idea of a return to the kitchen, but he’s passed on it each time. Bird contends that Ratatouille is one of the flicks he’s directed that was complete when the credits rolled.

The director noted that just because a film resonates with an audience doesn’t automatically mean it needs a sequel. He’s been selective on what sequels he is willing to entertain during the entirety of his career. While he’s signed on for some, he’s just not there when it comes to Ratatouille. Bird believes the story has been told and that there is nothing left there to return to. While it feels natural to want more, considering the beloved nature of the movie, Bird’s point lands. Ratatouille ends with Remy, Linguini, and Colette running a new restaurant together, called La Ratatouille, where rats work in a hidden upstairs kitchen, and humans dine below. While, technically, a second movie could follow that journey, it would likely feel too similar to the original.

Patton Oswalt isn’t against returning

While Brad Bird is completely against the idea of delving back into Remy’s life on the big screen, voice actor Patton Oswalt is not. Oswalt, who fans likely remember from The King of Queens, voiced Remy for the 2007 film, and has sung its praises ever since.

During a podcast appearance, Oswalt said he would be happy to voice Remy again if Ratatouille 2 were ever made. His announcement came with one big caveat, though. Oswalt said he wasn’t interested in a “cash grab.” The actor revealed that he’d only return if the story felt authentic and important. Since Bird has no interest in conjuring up a new storyline, it seems like that dream won’t happen.

While Bird’s reasoning makes a lot of sense, we can understand why Oswalt and the production studio would be interested in returning for a second run. Ratatouille was both a critical and commercial success, earning five Oscar nominations and winning Best Animated Feature. The movie grossed more than $623 million worldwide, lapping its $150 million budget several times over. Remy has remained a fixture of the Disney brand, turning up across parks and projects. The beloved rat even has a dedicated ride at Disneyland Paris and at Epcot in Florida. By almost any metric, it looks like prime sequel material. Still, Pixar likely wants Bird’s buy-in first, and they just aren’t going to get it.
