Kirk Cameron Reveals Why He Dumped ‘Terrible’ California for Nashville

Kirk Cameron might be a born-and-bred Californian, but these days he calls Tennessee home.

The Growing Pains actor recently appeared on <a href=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIieoBIqVug” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Adam Carolla’s podcast, where the two discussed their real feelings about the Golden State. Cameron relocated with his family in 2024, telling <a href=”https://www.foxnews.com/video/6356859757112″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Fox & Friends that he wanted to live somewhere that was more aligned with his conservative Christian values and where he was around others interested in “building community around faith, family, and freedom.” But the move has been an adjustment, he admits.

“I’m in Tennessee now, but I miss California,” the actor told Carolla. “Because I miss being able to go out in the backyard and not come back in covered in chigger bites, mosquito bites, and humidity that just chokes you.”

“California gets by on the weather and the topography,” Carolla agreed.

“When you’re a kid in California, it’s great,” Cameron said. “Because your parents are paying for everything. So, you go to the beach, you’re hanging out, you’re going snow skiing, you get to eat an In-N-Out burger, you get to get some, you know, hot dogs downtown in Hollywood. It’s great. You’re having a good time.”

“But then, like my kids, they finally got out on their own and they realized how expensive it is,” he continued. “They realized how terrible the politics are. And all of the other things that make it difficult to raise a family there. And so all of the sudden it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, we gotta move. We gotta go some place where we can actually thrive. And maybe even just survive.’”

That said, Cameron has not thrown in the towel on his home state completely, noting that he wasn’t “ready to go full Cracker Barrel yet.”

“I hope to come back one day. Because pound for pound, I think California has just so much to offer,” he said. “Although Tennessee is getting better.”

“There’s so many creatives here that have good values, they love their family, they’re proud of their country,” he said. “And the whiskey’s great. So if you like whiskey and hot chicken, Nashville is the place to be. Not to mention, the music scene out here is pretty great.”

Carolla, who also grew up in California, noted that other parts of the country have caught up to the state in terms of some amenities.

“Other places are nice now,” Carolla said. “They have P.F. Changs and Topgolf and In-n-Out Burger.”
