Timothée Chalamet is competing for the Best Actor Oscar this year. For a long time, the actor was viewed as the frontrunner for his role in Marty Supreme. After recent backlash over comments he made about ballet and opera, some have wondered if his chances are in danger. Oscar voters commented on their opinion of Chalamet ahead of the ceremony.

In a recent conversation with Matthew McConaughey, Chalamet spoke about supporting movie theaters.

“I’m really right in the middle, Matthew,” he said, per <a href=”https://variety.com/2026/film/news/timothee-chalamet-backlash-ballet-opera-town-hall-1236681592/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Variety. “Cause I admire people, and I’ve done it myself, [who] go on a talk show and go, ‘Hey, we gotta keep movie theaters alive. You know, we gotta keep this genre alive.’ And another part of me feels like, if people wanna see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they’re gonna go see it and go out of their way and be loud and proud about it.”

He said he didn’t want the movie industry to become obsolete, and pointed to two other art forms as an example.

“And I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive.’ Even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore,” he said. “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”

His remarks sparked widespread backlash from fans, people in the industry, and even opera houses.

Oscar voters reacted to Timothée Chalamet’s recent comments

The backlash to Chalamet’s remarks came shortly before the Oscars, leading some to wonder if this could damage his chances of winning Best Actor. One anonymous Oscar voter admitted that it wasn’t likely to win him any votes.

“Oh, yeah. F*** that guy,” they told <a target=”_blank” href=”https://ew.com/2026-oscars-secret-ballot-anonymous-academy-voters-reveal-picks-11922306″ rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Entertainment Weekly.

They added that the comments came across as unnecessarily nasty.

“It’s so trashy,” they said. “Punching down on artists who make a fraction of what he makes, yet have spent 10 to 20 years honing their craft? I’m sorry, you know, this guy is not Philip Seymour Hoffman. And Philip Seymour Hoffman would certainly never punch down on opera or ballet dancers. That’s an entitled dude. I’m sorry. I lost a lot of respect for him.”

Another Oscar voter said Chalamet’s bombastic campaign turned them off to him.

“I think there was an arrogance to Timothée’s campaigning that, in the year 2026, no one wants to hear or see somebody say that they deserved this Oscar,” they said. “It felt tone deaf and really disappointing, because I love that movie.”

How many Oscar nominations has Timothée Chalamet received?

Chalamet’s Marty Supreme Oscar nomination is his third time competing for the prize.
