<p id=”par-1_37″>The 1970s were the best decade for soul <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/music/”>music</a>. Many <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/ringo-starr-said-1-al-green-song-blew-away.html/”>Al Green songs</a> are classics, but not all of them hit No. 1. One of them was a duet with a star in a completely different genre.</p>

Those songs were “Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy),” “You Ought to Be with Me,” “Here I Am (Come and Take Me),” “Look What You Done for Me,” “I’m Still in Love with You,” “Call Me (Come Back Home),” “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” (a duet with Annie Lennox <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/eurythmics-thought-marilyn-mansons-sweet-dreams-cover.html/”>from the Eurythmics</a>), and “Let’s Stay Together.” Only the latter reached No. 1.</p>
<p id=”par-3_101″>That’s not surprising. Momentum begets momentum. Among all of Green’s big hits, “Let’s Stay Together” is the only one that seems to get a lot of airplay on oldies stations these days. The song’s intro alone is instantly recognizable all these decades later. It’s the sort of song that sticks with you, whether you are happy or sad. In addition, “Let’s Stay Together” is perfect and universal in its simplicity. Also, unlike his cover of “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” “Let’s Stay Together” is not associated with an awful Christmas movie — in this case, <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/scrooged-bill-murray-funniest-moment-christmas-classic-completely-accident.html/”><em>Scrooged </em>starring Bill Murray</a>.</p>

<p id=”par-4_73″>During a 2022 interview with <a href=”https://music.apple.com/us/station/al-green-tribute/ra.1606059566″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Estelle Show</a>, Green was asked if he had a favorite vocal performance from his career. “I can’t pick [a favorite performance], and the reason I can’t pick [is] because all the songs are my children,” he said. “And I can’t pick ‘Tired of Being Alone’ over ‘Let’s Stay Together.’ I can’t pick ‘I’m Still in Love with You’ over ‘Let’s Stay Together’ because they’re all my kids. </p>
<p id=”par-5_88″>“And so I have to … I love them all, so I hug them all and say … So somebody will say, ‘Well, you can’t sing this stuff in church. I mean, you’re not going to be able to,’” he said. “I say, ‘I’m not trying to make you accept anything that I am or am not. I’m just doing what I’m called to do. And I’m not trying to push anything over on you. I don’t care about that. You can believe what you want to believe.’” </p>

<p id=”par-6_57″>Unlike a lot of 1970s artists, Green’s music has aged very well. Green was asked how he felt about the fact that his music stuck around. “I kind of smile and duck my head behind the seat of the car and laugh a little bit and then try to straighten up and go ahead on,” he said.</p>
<p id=”par-7_74″>“Let’s Stay Together” is going to be with us for a long time. There are a lot of great R&B/soul songs about hot, casual sex. There are also a lot of silly love songs out there. “Let’s Stay Together” is a song about true love and commitment. We need songs like that for serious relationships. “Let’s Stay Together” might be the best song of that type besides The Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”</p>
<p id=”par-8_15″>Green didn’t have many No. 1 hits, but “Let’s Stay Together” was a home run.</p>
