Bryan Kohberger’s Mother Told FBI Agents She’d Bet on Her Son’s Innocence

Bryan Kohberger is currently incarcerated and will remain so for the rest of his natural life. He pleaded guilty to the slaying of four University of Idaho students just days before his trial date. Long before a trial date was set, and across the country from where he murdered Xana Kernodle, Maddie Mogen, Ethan Chapin, and Kaylee Goncalves, his mother told FBI agents that she believed there had been a terrible mistake. Newly released FBI transcripts are pulling back the curtain on the moments immediately following Bryan Kohberger’s December 2022 arrest. At the center of those documents is a mother who refused to believe her son had done anything wrong.

Newly unsealed FBI transcripts reveal where Maryann Kohberger’s head was while her son was being arrested. According to transcripts, she told agents they were making a “really, really bad mistake” as they took her son into custody at the family’s Pennsylvania home. The transcripts are coming to light as retired FBI agent Christopher Whitcomb’s book, Broken Plea: The Explosive Search for Truth Behind the Idaho Murders, is set to be released.

In the files, Maryann called her son, then a PhD student, “my angel.” She went on to insist she would bet her own life on his innocence. Despite the investigation and the raid, Maryann reportedly clung to the belief that the police had descended on her home in error. During the interview, Maryann told authorities that her son was not a partier or a drinker. She said he had a high GPA and was academically minded. According to Primetimer, she even told investigators that nothing seemed amiss during their regular phone calls.

Maryann Kohberger may have insisted her son was an unproblematic angel. Still, the years since the murders have revealed a far more complicated and troubled individual than the one she described. While Maryann insisted her son had no issues with substances, several people have come forward to say he did struggle with substance abuse as a high school student.

While she portrayed him as studious and unproblematic, several of his professors considered him a problem student. Female students reportedly found him uncomfortable to be around. His aggressive nature was showing as the semester progressed. Kohberger’s reputation during his lone semester at Washington State University was so concerning that he would have been asked to leave had he not been arrested first.

She insisted she never saw violent tendencies in her child. Still, records show that the knife used to kill the four victims was purchased while Bryan was still living in her home. It was delivered to the family’s Pennsylvania address in March 2022, eight months before the murders.

Where Is Bryan Kohberger Now?

Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary for the November 13, 2022, killings of four University of Idaho students inside an off-campus house. He accepted a last-minute plea deal on June 30, 2025, to avoid the death penalty. His guilty plea was entered on July 2, just weeks before his trial was set to begin.

Kohberger is currently incarcerated at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution in Kuna, Idaho. He lives in a long-term restrictive housing unit to keep him separated from the general population. Since his arrival, he has lodged several complaints, insisting he is being taunted by other inmates.
