MAGA-aligned U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), who has been advocating for President Trump’s SAVE America Act, which would require American citizens to show documents like a passport or birth certificate to register to vote and a photo ID to vote, reiterated his opinion today on social media and wrote: “There is no legitimate argument against the SAVE America Act, Not even one.”

U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) believes such a change in the voting process requires years of planning and there isn’t enough time before Election Day in November to get the approximately 10,000 different government entities (on the local and state levels) prepared to comply with the letter of the new law.
Three months (assuming the Senate passed the bill and the President signed it within the next two weeks) is not enough time to implement voter ID policy, according to the North Carolina lawmaker.
Tillis said: “It can’t be done, can’t be a serious effort.” He added, “Don’t fool people into thinking you can implement something of this complexity over 60 days. My god, it needed to happen two years ago.”
Referring to Lee and other SAVE Act advocates, Tillis addressed President Trump: “These people are misleading you, if they’re telling you that this can be implemented by November.”

U.S. Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) also objected to Lee’s push for the Act and President Trump’s claims of election fraud.
Massie said on MS NOW: “I asked my Republican colleagues, ‘Why are you complaining about election fraud? We won all the damn elections.’ The fraud that’s going on is that we’re not holding ourselves to the promises that we made of fiscal responsibility, putting America first, and making America healthy. The problem is we’re wasting the opportunity that we were given in these elections that we won all of them.”

[NOTE: The Brennan Center for Justice, which has researched the potential effects of such legislation, has also provided several arguments against the act including that “more than 21 million Americans lack ready access to those documents” and “roughly half of Americans don’t even have a passport.” In addition, “millions lack access to a paper copy of their birth certificate.”]
The Brennan Center also reported that the SAVE Act would put a massive burden on state and local election officials, who would be legally responsible for deciding whether a voter has provided the correct, or proper amount of, paperwork to prove citizenship.
