Marco Rubio Slammed by U.S. Senator: “We Are Badly and Embarrassingly Losing This War”

Sec. Rubio

President Trump’s Secretary of State Marco Rubio is being criticized for his appearance on Good Morning America this week. As seen below, Rubio insisted that the objectives of the U.S. “operation” (note, not “war”) in Iran are clear and told Americans to “write them down.”

Rubio listed four objectives: “1. The destruction of Iran’s air force 2. The destruction of their navy 3. The severe diminishing of their missile launching capability 4. The destruction of their factories.”

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) argued against Rubio’s claims on social media. “Here’s the problem. These are all ‘tactical’ objectives. They are not strategy. Because there IS NO strategy.”

Murphy addressed each of the four objectives provided by Rubio based on what he said he’s learned in briefings, and claimed the information shows “why we are badly and embarrassingly losing this war.” Murphy noted that the U.S. cannot destroy all their air force because drones are replacing airplanes. He also noted that destroying their navy doesn’t effect the closing of the Strait of Hormuz.

Regarding Rubio’s third objective, to “diminish” Iran’s missile capacity, Murphy replied: “First, this is a new goal. Weeks ago, Rubio said the goal was to ‘destroy’ Iran’s missiles. Why the change? Because we are failing in the original mission. Iran still has most of their missiles.”

Murphy concluded his long thread by pointing to “the real problem,” which is that destroying their factories will be futile because “Russia/China are going to help them rebuild as soon as our bombing stops anyway.”

Murphy is hardly the only lawmaker questioning the goals and relative successes of the Iran war. Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) told CNN recently that the “goal of this war was to fundamentally change the Iranian regime” — a goal Trump himself expressed early on.

Yet despite the decapitation of Iranian leadership, a hoped-for uprising against the Iranian theocracy has not followed the American-Israeli bombings, despite Trump urging the Iranian people to “take back their country.” Rep. Smith said this week that the U.S. is “stuck in a bad place” and that “it’s important to point out that it doesn’t appear that we are directly speaking with anyone in Iran.”
