MAGA Congressman Slammed After False “Green New Deal” Hotel Claim

Rep. Clay Fuller

Newly-elected MAGA-aligned U.S. Representative Clay Fuller (R-GA), who just won former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene‘s seat in a special election, is being slammed for a complaint he made on social media about the air conditioning system in his hotel room.

As seen below, Fuller, who describes himself as “a veteran fighting for Main Street,” wrote: “Just stayed at a hotel in Maryland for work. Turns out their AC units shut off while you sleep as part of some new woke Green New Deal nonsense. It’s a terrible policy that’s making their state like Europe. Just one more example of why they’ve never won an SEC Championship.”

[NOTE: Despite his presumably serious complaints, Fuller’s performance is seemingly also delivered half in jest — the U.S. Congressman likely doesn’t really believe that Georgia was named after George Washington.]

Elon Musk’s X AI bot Grok addressed some of Fuller’s misconceptions in a note, writing: “Maryland has no laws or incentives requiring hotels to shut off AC while guests are sleeping. A 2012 law (updated in the Public Safety Code) requires *newly built* hotels to install master control devices that turn off lights (and *optionally* adjust HVAC temp by ~3°F) *30 minutes after the room is vacated*—not while occupied. This is standard energy code stuff, not “Green New Deal” (the bill predates it by years). What you experienced was likely the hotel’s own motion/occupancy sensors kicking in during low movement (like sleep). Common in many chains for efficiency, but not state-mandated for occupied rooms.”

MAGA supporters are in agreement with Fuller, including influencer Brigitte Gabriel, who wrote: “The Left wants America more like Europe.” Others in the comments are criticizing Fuller for not understanding how to work the thermostat.

Virginia Democrat Matt Royer, a member of the DNC Youth Council, delivered a reply dripping with disdain: “Maryland winning the SEC championship would be impressive for a number of reasons. Also just turn the auto feature off on the AC unit, Mr. Maytag.”

[NOTE: Maryland competes in the NCAA Big Ten Conference, and therefore could not win the SEC Conference championship, just as the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers cannot win the Super Bowl.]

Another commenter, echoing Grok, replied to Fuller: “Some hotels have smart thermostats that shut off after no motion is detected, but doesn’t usually happen when sleeping. Did you change the setting, or was it too difficult for you?”

Another wrote, “I’m in hotels 150 nights a year. Lots of them have a thermostat which is governed without you knowing. You try to decrease the temp from 71 to 69 and nothing happens. They’re doing it to save money, not to comply with regulations. Your comfort matters none.”
