GOP Senator Trolls MAGA Congressman, “How About Showing Up for Work?”

MAGA-aligned U.S. Representative Wesley Hunt (R-TX), who is running for the Senate seat held by incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), said he offered to debate Democratic candidate Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) but claims “she ran from it.”

Hunt, who represents a white-majority district (and has accused Crockett of “dragging out slavery tropes”), says he won his congressional seat “because a lot of white people had to vote for this black man because they are not judging me by the color of my skin but by the content of my character. And nobody has asked me to pick cotton at any point of my entire life.” Hunt added that during his military career he was asked to fly an Apache helicopter.

Responding to Hunt, Cornyn didn’t address Hunt’s comments about Crockett or “slavery tropes” but instead replied: “How about showing up for work to support the Trump agenda?”

Hunt replied: “It’s rich being lectured on President Trump’s agenda by someone who was nowhere to be found when it mattered. While I was in Iowa nine times and crisscrossing the country fighting for President Trump, you were invisible.”

Capitol Hill correspondent Jamie Dupree jumped into the Cornyn/Hunt thread and reported: “Rep. Wesley Hunt R-TX has showed up for only one day of work on Capitol Hill so far in 2026. Hunt has missed 25 of the 28 House votes in the first two weeks.”

NBC News correspondent Melanie Zanona also reported: “Multiple leaders – including Speaker Johnson – have spoken directly w/ Hunt about his attendance, per sources But Hunt has promised that if he’s needed, he’ll fly back for votes That happened last week, when Hunt flew back to D.C. after his presence was requested for a key vote.”

Note: Hunt and Cornyn are also running against MAGA-aligned Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton; Trump has not yet endorsed a candidate in the Texas Senate race. In the Democratic primary, Crockett is running against State Representative James Talarico, who according to an Emerson College Polling/Nexstar Media survey, is 9 points ahead of Crockett.

According to the same survey, “Neither Ken Paxton nor John Cornyn appears positioned to reach 50% on the primary ballot, as the Republican electorate remains sharply divided. With Wesley Hunt gaining traction at 16%, a runoff between the two candidates now appears likely in May.”
