Miami Heat Trade Pitch Lands Kyrie Irving With Giannis in New 4-Player Deal

The Miami Heat is still on the lookout to add more star power alongside the freshly-acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo. 

Antetokounmpo, 31, was traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Heat in a blockbuster trade in June. The two-time NBA MVP certainly makes Miami more intriguing, but the franchise might be another superstar piece away from seeing eye to eye with the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks. 

One player who has frequently been mentioned in trade speculation this offseason is Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving. Although Irving, 34, is aging and coming off major injury, if the Heat find a way to pair him with Antetokounmpo, the duo would significantly elevate the team’s chances of winning a title. 

The Trade Idea That Sends Kyrie Irving to the Miami Heat

The Heat expended most of its assets in the deal for Antetokounmpo, meaning any trade will require the front office to get creative, especially in trying to land a player of Irving’s caliber. 

In a hypothetical scenario, the Heat picks up the phone and calls the Mavs to discuss a trade for Irving, a nine-time All-Star. Here is a proposed framework that brings Irving to Miami. Would the Mavs do this deal?

Heat receives: Kyrie Irving, Caleb Martin

Mavs receive: Andrew Wiggins, Davion Mitchell, a 2027 second round pick, a 2029 first round pick and a 2031 first round pick.

It is important to reiterate that this trade is hypothetical and intended as a fun (and legal!) suggestion. So why might this deal work for both teams?

Why Dallas and Miami Do the Trade

If the Mavs move Irving anytime soon, it will be because they’ve recognized that it’s time to put everything behind Cooper Flagg, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and position the franchise to build an even stronger asset base as it grows into a contender around its young superstar.

By agreeing to this trade, the Mavs shave north of $19 million in payroll and generate $27 million in tax space. They also move Martin, helping clear up a crowded frontcourt that already has more than $334 million committed to forwards and centers while opening up more room for Cooper Flagg, Naji Marshall and standout rookie Morez Johnson Jr.

Dallas also loads up its asset clip with some draft capital. Meanwhile, Mitchell, 27, would be a temporary fill-in for Irving, and the Mavs could flip Wiggins, a two-way star in his prime with high trade value, for additional assets. There are plenty of ways the Mavs could continue turning this trade into more assets and set up a winning future. 

For Miami, pairing Irving with Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo is a formula to come out of the Eastern Conference next season. Unless Irving comes back a shell of his former self, Irving is the perfect point guard to pair with the slashing Antetokounmpo. The firepower of that duo speaks for itself.

Ultimately, with how much the East landscape has changed this offseason, the Heat may realize it needs to make another splash to give itself the best chance to contend with the Sixers and Knicks.
