The Mets’ poor season resulted in them being major sellers ahead of the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. They traded multiple notable names, including Freddy Peralta, Clay Holmes, Luke Weaver, Brooks Raley, Huascar Brazoban, and A.J. Minter. With this, the Mets certainly have a different-looking roster than they did at the start of the season.
Given how many pitchers the Mets traded ahead of the deadline, it is clear that they should be looking to add to their pitching staff this offseason. They should undoubtedly be looking to strengthen their pitching rotation, and this year’s best pending unrestricted free agent is recently acquired Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tarik Skubal.
Now, the Mets have received an encouraging free agent prediction regarding Skubal.
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Kerry Miller predicted that the Mets will end up signing Skubal to a six-year, $280 million contract in free agency.
“Assuming for now that there isn’t going to be any sort of salary cap implemented this offseason, the omnipresent candidates for such a contract are the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets. And of that trio, the Mets are most certainly the most desperate to land a starting pitcher, as the other two each already have three ace-caliber pitchers signed through at least 2028,” Miller wrote. “Prediction: 6 years, $280M with the New York Mets.”
With the Mets looking to turn things around next season and needing pitching, it would make all the sense in the world if they made a massive push for Skubal. He could be exactly the star pitcher that helps New York bounce back next season.
Mets Need a Superstar Pitcher Like Skubal for Next Season
With how this season has gone for the Mets, there is no question that they should be looking to make major moves this offseason. Because of this, bringing in a two-time Cy Young Award winner like Skubal is something they should work incredibly hard to achieve.
If the Mets signed Skubal this winter, he would give them a top-of-the-line ace who could help them become a playoff team again. Landing a superstar like Skubal could also help the Mets attract more talent as they look to prove that this season has been a fluke.
The Mets Are Going to Have a Lot of Competition to Land Skubal
While Skubal looks like a perfect fit for the Mets, he is going to generate a ton of interest in free agency this year as one of baseball’s best pitchers. Miller specifically noted the Dodgers and New York Yankees as two teams that could look to sign him. However, it undoubtedly won’t stop there, as teams like the Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, and Milwaukee Brewers could also make a push. The Detroit Tigers could also even try to reunite with him.
Due to this, the Mets are going to have a lot of competition to land Skubal if they target him. It will be interesting to see if this prediction comes true.
