The Seattle Seahawks have done the majority of their offseason work in the wake of their Super Bowl victory, but there is still one very important piece of business that needs to be taken care of. That involves signing superstar cornerback Devon Witherspoon to a new contract extension that would make him the highest-paid player at his position in the league.
For all intents and purposes, the Seahawks have seemed willing to give Witherspoon the sort of deal he is looking for, but no deal has been agreed to yet. According to a new update on the situation, it sounds like there is still a notable lack of progress in these contract talks as Week 1 continues to draw near.
Seahawks Receive Worrying Devon Witherspoon Contract Update
The No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Witherspoon entered the pros with the billing of a potential superstar cornerback, and he has proven that label to be accurate. Witherspoon has been a Pro Bowler in each of his first three seasons with the Seahawks, and he just helped the team take down the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX.
Coincidentally enough, the Patriots are actually a reason why Witherspoon’s negotiations have been so complicated. That’s because New England has its own star cornerback, Christian Gonzalez, who is in the exact same sport as Witherspoon. Both guys want to be the highest-paid player at their position, and they have a legitimate argument for the title.
Making matters even more difficult for both teams, Witherspoon and Gonzalez are represented by the same agent, and the belief is that these guys are essentially using each other as leverage in their own contract negotiations. All Seattle can do is worry about Witherspoon’s deal, though, and while it is willing to make him the highest-paid cornerback in the league, NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed that the two sides aren’t close to a new contract just yet.
“It doesn’t seem to me that anything is imminent or close right now. The Seahawks would like to make him the highest-paid (cornerback),” Rapoport said on “Inside Training Camp.” “Witherspoon wants to be far clear of the highest-paid, wants the deal to be structured better for him. The communication has been good, the dialogue has been good, they are just not there yet, and they are going to keep talking right up until the start of the season.”

Ideally, this would be a situation that the Seahawks already would have taken care of, but there are several different aspects of these negotiations that have prevented them from actually accomplishing that. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, but Seattle is going to have to wait a little longer than expected to get this one over the finish line.
Witherspoon still has two years left on his rookie contract, so it’s not the end of the world if this deal doesn’t get taken care of immediately, but it seems like all parties want to get something done before the start of the season. So while nothing is imminent right now, it’d be a surprise if Witherspoon didn’t have a new deal in place by the time Week 1 rolls around.
