The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have found themselves with a pair of difficult contract situations on their hands to begin training camp. Both Baker Mayfield and Vita Vea want new deals, and they both are taking very different paths when it comes to their quest to get what they want.
Mayfield’s situation has certainly drawn more attention, as he hasn’t been shy in voicing his displeasure with how his negotiations with the Buccaneers have unfolded. With negotiations going nowhere, Mayfield made it clear that he would not return to the negotiating table once training camp gets underway. While some folks think the Pro Bowl passer is bluffing, one insider quickly shot down that notion.
Insider Weighs in on Baker Mayfield’s Contract Ultimatum
Mayfield’s contract negotiations have been complex, to say the least. In his first two seasons with the Bucs, Mayfield was a Pro Bowler, and while he was solid again last year (343/543, 3,693 YDS, 26 TD, 11 INT), it’s tough to ignore the fact that Tampa Bay endured a stunning second-half collapse with their star quarterback at the wheel.
That did not deter Mayfield from pursuing a long-term contract extension that would pay him between $55-$60 million annually. Understandably, that price was too high for the Buccaneers’ liking, leading to a staring contest that Mayfield made public on several occasions. With a self-imposed deadline of July 28 (the first day of training camp), that has seemingly led to these negotiations being tabled for the time being.
Of course, nothing is preventing these two sides from returning to the negotiating table, despite Mayfield’s deadline. And yet, while that could conceivably happen, insider Ian Rapoport of NFL Network doesn’t believe Mayfield is the type of guy to go back on his word, even when it comes to securing a massive contract extension.
“No, I would say this. Baker Mayfield is a man of his word,” Rapoport said on “Inside Training Camp.” “When he talks about cutting off contract negotiations when (training camp) starts, doesn’t want to think about it, only wants to think about football, I believe him.”

Throughout his career, Mayfield has often been at his best when he’s counted out. The Bucs were a team that took a flier on him, but now, they have gotten cold feet when it comes to committing to Mayfield long-term. You can bet that Mayfield is going to look to prove his team wrong and play his way into an even bigger deal next offseason.
Tampa Bay would be happy to see Mayfield enjoy a return to form in 2026, even if it costs them an extra couple of million dollars when it comes to these extension talks. Letting Mayfield potentially walk into free agency next offseason is a risky proposition, though, and it will be interesting to see if the Buccaneers try to coax a deal out of the former No. 1 overall pick, even though he has said he won’t be discussing his contract status anymore.
