The New York Rangers have undoubtedly had a busy offseason. They have brought in several new players this summer, which include Pavel Dorofeyev, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Marcus Pettersson, Sean Durzi, Joonas Korpisalo, and Joe Veleno. With this, there are going to be plenty of new players for their fans to watch during training camp.
Yet, when looking at the Rangers’ current roster, it is fair to argue that they should still consider inviting a player to their training camp on a professional tryout (PTO) agreement. They have roster spots to fight for, and it would not hurt for them to create more competition at their training camp because of it.
There are some interesting remaining free agents who could make sense for the Rangers to take a look at on a PTO. Due to this, let’s discuss three specific players who the Rangers should consider signing to a PTO now.
Rangers Should Take a Gamble on Patrik Laine
With the Rangers needing another scoring forward, it would make a lot of sense if they gave Patrik Laine a chance on a PTO. The 28-year-old winger is a three-time 30-goal scorer, and there would be no risk in New York adding him to training camp on a PTO. This would allow them the chance to see if he could be a fit on their roster before committing to signing him for the season.
Laine was limited to only five games last season due to injury, but posted 20 goals and 33 points in 52 games with the Montreal Canadiens in 2024-25. He also had 52 points in 55 games during the 2022-23 season and 56 points in 56 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2021-22. With this, he has had recent success and is an interesting PTO option for New York.
Rangers Should Take a Chance on Big Defenseman Logan Stanley
The Rangers could use another left-shot defenseman ahead of the 2026-27 season. Due to this, one player who the Blueshirts should consider looking at on a PTO is defenseman Logan Stanley. He is the best left-shot defenseman still remaining on the market and would have the potential to be a solid addition to the Rangers’ blueline if he earned a contract for the season.
If Stanley impressed during his PTO and got signed by the Rangers, he would give them a 6-foot-7 defenseman who plays a heavy game and makes things more difficult for opponents. The 28-year-old defenseman certainly showed that last season, as he recorded 110 hits and 128 penalty minutes in 76 games split between the Winnipeg Jets and Buffalo Sabres.
Stanley also had a solid year offensively, posting career highs with nine goals, 17 assists, and 26 points. With this, he would be an intriguing player for the Rangers to sign to a PTO.
Rangers Have Bounce-Back Candidate PTO Target in Jonathan Drouin
Jonathan Drouin was bought out by the St. Louis Blues earlier this offseason after a tough season. In 64 games split between the New York Islanders and Blues, he posted four goals and 24 points. However, he could bounce back if given another chance, so he could be worth taking a look at on a PTO for the Rangers.
Just back in 2024-25 with the Colorado Avalanche, he posted 11 goals and 37 points in just 43 games. He also had 19 goals and 56 points in 79 games for Colorado in 2023-24, so he has had some recent success.
