Newly acquired Chicago Cubs starter Kevin Gausman was praised by his new teammates after winning his debut for the Cubs.
The Cubs defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-4 on the road on Friday, August 7, with Gausman improving to 10-6 on the season by being the pitcher of record.
He went 7 IP, allowing 4 hits, 1 BB, and 2 ER, while also striking out four as the Cubs improved to 68-49 on the season, further strengthening their playoff position ahead of the season’s stretch run.
After the game, his new teammates praised his performance.
Kevin Gausman Praised by New Cubs Teammates
Speaking to reporters after the game, Gausman’s new teammates had nothing but good things to say about his debut for the team.
“It seemed like he got stronger as it went. He’s nasty. He really is,” Cubs catcher Carson Kelly said (via MLB.com).
Cubs manager Craig Counsell was also thrilled with how Gausman performed in his first game for Chicago, as he knows how important the veteran will be if the Cubs are to make a long postseason run this year.
“That’s one of the reasons you trade for somebody like this. This is a guy that we can’t throw something at him that he hasn’t seen. Guys like that are prepared for anything. That doesn’t take away the emotion of getting traded, or seeing your old team kind of come to town right away. But it teaches you how to process it and move forward,” Counsell said.
“And Gaus has been in every situation. And he’s been in big situations. And he’s been traded. And he’s been on the next team. He knows how he has to react to that to be an effective pitcher. And tonight was a great example of it.”

Gausman himself reacted to the successful start, saying he was happy to just get back onto the mound after being traded last week.
“Listen, it’s been a lot. Not just baseball. There’s a lot going on. That’s why I say that it was nice to get out there and just focus on getting guys out,” Gausman said.
