Christian Gonzalez usually keeps his answers short.
His coverage did plenty of talking during Thursday’s New England Patriots practice, and something else caught everyone’s eye.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported on X that Gonzalez’s edge and trash talk after tight coverage appeared to spark the exchange between him and A.J. Brown.
The two stars looked as though they nearly needed to be separated while the team moved to its next drill.
Gonzalez didn’t do a lot to lower the temperature afterward, though he did note “no disrespect” between the two players.
“He’s a No. 1 receiver in this league going up against the No. 1 corner,” Gonzalez said, according to a video shared by Reiss. “I mean, that’s how it’s going to go.”

Gonzalez has built his reputation through calm, controlled coverage, even when the assignment across from him includes one of the league’s most physical receivers.
Thursday offered a more animated version of the Patriots’ top corner.
Gonzalez jawed after winning a rep and held his ground when Brown answered. He also kept the disagreement within the boundaries of a camp competition.
“It’s football at the end of the day,” Gonzalez said.
The matchup has enough talent to support Gonzalez’s description.
Brown arrived in New England after producing four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gonzalez has earned second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition while becoming the player New England trusts with its toughest coverage assignment.
Brown has offered his own endorsement.
Earlier in camp, he called Gonzalez “maybe the best in the game” and said the margin for error against him is small, via 98.5 The Sports Hub.
That respect hasn’t softened the daily work.

The tension Thursday was another step in a competition that has moved back and forth since camp opened.
Gonzalez controlled portions of the early practices.
Brown began finding more room as his timing improved with Drake Maye. Their reps have included contested catches, pass breakups, celebrations and a steady stream of conversation between plays.
Brown even dislocated his left thumb while working against Gonzalez on Monday.
He put it back in place and finished practice, telling NFL Network that he was not coming out because of the injury, as Pats Pulpit reported.
Mike Vrabel has welcomed the edge while drawing a firm line at punches or anything that could carry into a game.
The Patriots head coach said Brown and Gonzalez have sent a clear message to the roster through their willingness to challenge each other.
Thursday tested that balance, and although the exchange came close enough to draw attention, both players returned to football.
For Gonzalez, the moment also revealed something that has usually remained understated.
New England’s No. 1 corner doesn’t view the Brown matchup as a chance to prove he belongs among the league’s best.
He already believes he sits at the top.
