The Green Bay Packers made it clear how they feel about Christian Watson this offseason. They paid him like a No. 1 receiver and cleared the room around him to prove it.
Fox Sports Ralph Vacchiano thinks the payoff is coming.
In a piece naming one breakout candidate from every NFC team, Vacchiano tabbed Watson as the Packers’ player poised for a star turn in 2026.

Vacchiano’s case started with the money.
The Packers didn’t hand Watson a four-year, $110 million deal “for more of the same,” Vacchiano wrote, pointing out that the 2022 second-rounder has never topped 41 catches or 620 yards in any of his four NFL seasons.
The offseason moves told the same story. Green Bay traded Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles and let Romeo Doubs leave for the New England Patriots in free agency, thinning out a once-crowded receiver room.
“What they did was clear the deck for the 27-year-old to finally fulfill his promise in what surely will be a larger role,” Vacchiano wrote.
There’s a catch to the projection, and Vacchiano named it. Matt LaFleur’s offense has never leaned on high passing volume, and it has always spread the ball around outside of the Davante Adams years.
But the target competition has thinned considerably.
“There are fewer weapons for quarterback Jordan Love to target now, and Watson has the talent to be the best of the smaller bunch,” Vacchiano wrote.

The extension was the biggest sign of Green Bay’s belief. Watson agreed to a four-year, $110.5 million deal in June, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, locking up a receiver the Packers see as a long-term centerpiece.
What makes the bet notable is where Watson was a year ago. He tore his ACL in the 2024 regular-season finale against the Chicago Bears, then attacked his rehab and returned to the field in late October.
He didn’t look rusty. In 10 games, Watson caught 35 passes for 611 yards and six touchdowns, the most consistent stretch of his career. Among receivers targeted at least 50 times, he ranked second with 17.5 yards per catch and third with a 122.6 passer rating when thrown to.
The production came in a reshaped room. Watson, Jayden Reed and 2025 first-round pick Matthew Golden are now the clear top three, with Reed also signing a three-year extension worth more than $50 million.
Watson admitted the roster turnover was hard to watch.
“It was definitely tough to see those guys go because they’re great friends of mine, great teammates,” Watson said during OTAs, per ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. “I definitely think there’ll be a lot more opportunities for the guys who are out there this year, myself included.”
Love isn’t worried about the drop-off.
“We’ve still got a very deep receiver room,” Love said, per Demovsky.
That confidence now rests heavily on Watson. He has the speed to run past any defender in the league, but he’s never stayed healthy for a full 17 games or produced like the player Green Bay just paid him to be. The talent has never been the question. The breakout Vacchiano predicted comes down to whether Watson can finally put a full season together.
