All indications are that Detroit Lions star running back Jahmyr Gibbs will get a contract extension done very soon. The Lions’ former first-round pick made an appearance at practice recently after staying inside while the team worked on the field.
Then, a few days after that, Gibbs showed up wearing full pads and a helmet. Gibbs stretched and walked to different drills with the team. However, he did not fully participate in practice. Still, this slow movement tends to signal that a deal is close and he is starting to prepare to be ready to get on the field once something gets done.
After practice, Gibbs tried to dodge reporters and questions about his deal. However, while he was getting into the locker room, he was asked how things were progressing.
Gibbs gave a thumbs-up sign, the latest indication that the two sides are moving forward quickly on a new deal.
All indications are the question is now when will a deal get done; there is little debate about if the deal gets done.
Detroit Lions and Jahmyr Gibbs Make Significant Contract Progress
The two factors that might be at play the most when it comes to Gibbs getting his new deal is Jonathan Taylor and Bijan Robinson signing their extensions. They were the other two big names that would be near the top of the market.
With those two signed, the Gibbs deal should be somewhat in line with the other two. So, there will be little wiggle room for either side to negotiate.
Robinson signed a three-year, $66.7M deal. That averaged $22.25M per year and came with $51M in guaranteed salary. Taylor signed shortly after and signed a two-year deal worth $44M in salary. So, he is making $22M per year, and he got $39M in guaranteed salary.
Taylor is three years older than Robinson, and he has a bit more injury concerns. So, it would make sense why he would come in a bit less than Robinson and a bit shorter on the years.
Still, the two laid a clear baseline for what Gibbs can expect. A deal is expected to get done at any time now.
