The Chicago Bears are dealing with a major problem in the secondary, with starting nickel back Kyler Gordon continuing to rehab, cornerback Terell Smith suffering an injury during practice on August 3rd, and safety Coby Bryant suffering a major setback.
The injuries in the secondary aren’t stopping there. According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, corner Dallis Flowers suffered a serious injury and had to be helped off the field during practice on August 4th.
“Dallis Flowers looks to be pretty seriously injured,” Cronin tweeted out. “Trainers are tending to his right leg while teammates take a knee around him. Looked like he got caught up with Kyron Hudson on the last play of 11 on 11 with the 3s. Can’t bare much weight on it and has to be helped off the field.”
Shortly after that injury occurred, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported that safety Gervarrius Owens went down in pain and was helped on a cart due to an apparent left leg injury.
“#Bears S Gervarrius Owens is down and in pain after final snap of punt drill. Was at the line of scrimmage,” Biggs tweeted out. “Owens is getting on a cart. Looks like a left leg issue.”
Bears Secondary Filled With Injuries

The situation is already frustrating, as is the case with Kyler Gordon, who hasn’t practiced this offseason and signed a massive three-year, $40 million extension in 2025.
“There is no update,” Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters after practice on August 4th. “He’s continuing to rehab.” He’s supposed to be a key piece in the secondary, yet, oddly, he hasn’t been able to practice for nearly six months due to an injury that did not require surgery.
And now matters continue to become more dire in Chicago with two major injuries, even if both Flowers and Owens are backups.
That leaves the secondary room with Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, and Josh Blackwell as projected starters at corner, with Cam Lewis set to fill in while Bryant recovers alongside rookie Dillon Thieneman.
As of now, depth is limited with just Jaylon Jones, Malik Muhammad, and Anthony Johnson.
Bears Could Look to Bring in Outside Help

The hope is all these players in the secondary can recover from injury by the time the 2026 season starts, but it’s never a bad idea to go out and sign some proven talent on a cheap one-year deal.
Here’s a list of some free agent cornerbacks and safeties the Bears could sign:
Corners:
- Marshon Lattimore, Age 30
- Trevon Diggs, 28
- Kenny Moore, 30
- Tre’Davious White, 31
- Jeff Okudah, 27
Safeties:
- Donovan Wilson, 29
- Xavier Woods, 31
- Taylor Rapp, 28
- Darnell Savage Jr., 29
- Terrell Edmunds, 29
The Bears could always go out and trade for a corner/safety, but there are plenty of options out on the open market, and this would be for a short-term fix, so wasting draft picks isn’t ideal.
Unless it’s for a player that could be a long-term answer, but the Bears, when healthy, have plenty of talent in the secondary. Regardless, things are not looking good in the backend of the defense as the Bears are dealing with multiple injuries.
