Karl-Anthony Towns is eligible for a four-year, $272 million extension, yet a new report suggests the front office may not be ready to offer him the full maximum despite his key role in the franchise’s title run.

According to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, Edward wrote, “One thing I’m certain of is that New York’s decision-makers will offer Towns an extension. What I’m not certain of, and don’t expect, is whether the cash-conscious Knicks will offer him a max contract.”
The reasoning is simple. New York has built one of the NBA’s deepest cores, with long-term money already committed to Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and others. A full max extension for Towns would make it much harder for the Knicks to avoid the league’s restrictive second apron and could limit future roster moves.
Edwards noted that New York’s front office has consistently valued flexibility under President Leon Rose. Rather than locking itself into an expensive payroll for years, the organization could look for a middle ground that rewards Towns while keeping enough financial room to adjust the roster if needed.
Towns Wants to Stay, but Business Comes First

The report does not indicate that the Knicks are looking to move on from Towns. In fact, the star center has repeatedly spoken about how much he enjoys being in New York. Earlier this offseason, Towns said he hopes to finish his career with the Knicks and wants to retire wearing a New York jersey, making it clear that he sees the franchise as his long-term home.
That could become an important factor if extension talks begin in earnest. If Towns is willing to accept less than the full max, similar to the flexibility Brunson previously showed, both sides could reach an agreement that keeps the championship core together.
My view is that this is less about questioning Towns’ value and more about protecting the Knicks’ future. Towns has earned a massive payday after helping elevate New York into a championship team. At the same time, Leon Rose has built a contender by thinking several moves ahead, not just one season at a time.
If the Knicks can strike a deal that rewards Towns while preserving roster flexibility, it would be another example of the balanced team-building approach that helped deliver the franchise’s first title in more than five decades.
