Lions QB Jared Goff Announces Potential Change in His Playing Plans

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff hasn’t seen a down of preseason action in nearly four years, but that could be changing this year.

The Lions quarterback this week hinted that he would be open to hitting the field for at least some of the team’s preseason games, giving the offense a chance to gel before the opening kickoff of the regular season.

Jared Goff Ready for Playing Change

Goff said this week that he would be open to whatever head coach Dan Campbell believes is best for the preseason. The team has undergone some changes under new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, and Goff

“I think I need whatever Dan thinks I need. I will play if they want us to play,” Goff told SiriusXM NFL radio, via SI.com. “We have a new coordinator, there’s certainly an argument for it. If he doesn’t want to put anyone out there, there’s certainly an argument for that, too. Whatever Dan wants to do, we will follow suit and see where it goes.”

The SI.com report noted that Petzing is bringing some changes to the team’s offense this season, hinting at a more even balance between running and passing. That will also mean bigger formations, including some three-tight-end sets.

Goff said the changes have been a work in progress through training camp.

“I think we’re finding out right now kind of who we want to be and have a good idea, but you’re still kind of working through that,” the longtime signal-caller said. “Drew will do whatever fits. If we had six running backs, we’d put them all on the field if we thought they were all the best players. I think he’s very flexible in what he wants to do. We have a really good problem with a lot of really good skill players, and want to be able to find a way to get them all the ball.”

The Lions have generally used training camp as an opportunity to determine the No. 2 quarterback, with some heated position battles in recent seasons.

Lions Have Big Decision in Their Future

The Lions are expected to lean more heavily on running back Jahmyr Gibbs as they aim for a better run-pass balance. The team faces a big contract decision on their star back, one that may have just grown more expensive after Bijan Robinson signed a three-year deal worth up to $75 million.

Gibbs held a “hold-in” during training camp while seeking a new deal. He told reporters that “only time will tell” when he joins his teammates, but Campbell said he’s hoping to get Gibbs back as soon as possible.

“I think it certainly’s not going to hurt,” Campbell said. “It’s not going to hurt, but we’ll see. I’m anxious to get Gibbs back out there. Every day that goes by, that’s another day that you feel like you miss with him and getting him out there with the guys and him doing his part. But, there again, it’ll get done when it gets done.”
