The Original ‘Gilmore Girls’ House Hits the Real Estate Market

For seven seasons, a backlot at Warner Bros. Studio was transformed into the picture-perfect town square of Stars Hollow. The production company didn’t dedicate that backlot to Gilmore Girls right away, though. The pilot episode was actually filmed on location, and now the house that served as Lorelai and Rory Gilmore’s happy home during that pilot episode is officially for sale. You could own it, but only if you are as rich as the Gilmores.

On a quiet street in Unionville, Ontario, sits a house that any Gilmore Girls fans would recognize. The home, on Victoria Street, helped land the series its first season, and now it has a “For Sale” sign out front. The house hit the market this week for $3.88 million (CAD).

The four-bedroom, four-bathroom home dates back to 1875, and even comes with a heritage building that once acted as a bakery while the village of Unionville was developing. With more than 2,800 square feet of living space, the spacious home is much larger than the two-bedroom Connecticut abode that Rory and Lorelai called home.

The listing has only been active for a short time, but there has already been plenty of interest. Realtor Carmen Ng told Boston.com that there has been a lot of interest in the home, but most people who are interested have no idea that the house has a special place in television history. Ng noted that only truly dedicated fans have dug deep enough to learn that the house was Lorelai and Rory’s first fictional home. Fans who have figured it out, however, have been a bit overzealous, though. Ng claims that the listing team has received requests from fans wanting side-by-side comparisons of the house today versus how it appeared in the pilot.

The Unionville listing is so exciting for Gilmore Girls fans because it is one of the only tangible connections to Gilmore Girls in the real world. While the pilot episode of Gilmore Girls was filmed in Unionville, Ontario, the show is actually famous for how quickly it was moved to a backlot and just how laser-focused it was on staying there. The show actually has almost none of its principal footage shot on the East Coast.

Once the show was picked up to series, the production team built Stars Hollow essentially from scratch. The fictional town was recreated on Midwest Street at the Warner Bros. lot, with detailed sets and props standing in for the town’s cafes, shops, and square. That included beloved fixtures fans would recognize instantly, since Luke’s Diner, the Dragonfly Inn, and the town square were all part of this elaborate backlot set.

While the series left the backlot occasionally, it never strayed from California after the pilot. The Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills stood in for the exterior of Rory’s prep school, Chilton. Pomona College in Claremont was used as a stand-in for Yale. The only East Coast footage prominently featured on the show is an aerial overview of a Vermont town used in the famous opening.
