Kazushi Kimura rode two mild-upset winners on closing day at Los Alamitos to maintain his success at the Orange County track’s daytime thoroughbred meets by tying Armando Ayuso and Edgar Payeras for leading jockey.
The three finished with nine wins each at the three-week meet. Kimura, who won with Ryan’s Girl ($8) and Mr. Disrespectful ($10.60) on Sunday, led or tied for the crown at all three Los Al thoroughbred meets in 2025. Ayuso and Payeras, who each had a single win Sunday, did it at one meet last year.
Genaro Vallejo saddled one winner Sunday, Ryan’s Girl, to tie Bob Baffert and Peter Miller for the trainers title, five victories apiece.
Del Mar begins its summer season Friday, July 17, with the Oceanside Handicap for 3-year-olds on turf featured on opening day. Entries are to be taken Saturday, July 11.
