The Buffalo Bills missed the chance to acquire Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett, as Cleveland traded him to the Rams in exchange for pass rusher Jared Verse, a first-round pick in 2027, a second-round pick in 2028 and a third-round pick in 2029.
Although Buffalo didn’t secure Garrett this offseason, it received encouraging news about the possibility of trading for him in the future.
The Browns’ third-round pick for 2029, which they received for Garrett, could potentially transform into a first-round selection if the Rams trade Garrett to the Ravens, Steelers, or Bengals before the 2029 NFL Draft, according to Mary Kay Cabot from Cleveland.com.
Since the Browns will face those three teams in the AFC North, they want to avoid the possibility of facing Garrett twice a season. This means those teams might be out of the running for Garrett over the next two seasons, which could put the Bills in a favorable position if the Rams decide to trade him.
Why the Rams Could Look to Trade Garrett in the Next Few Years
It may sound silly that the Rams would give up so much to trade for Garrett and then, just two years later, turn around and trade him again, but that’s definitely a possibility.
The Rams made a bold move by trading for Garrett, signaling their determination to go all in and chase a Super Bowl victory this season and potentially next season if veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford is still in the mix. Stafford will turn 39 next winter, and this could very well be the final season of his career.
If Stafford does retire after this season, the Rams could be looking toward a full rebuild, with Ty Simpson as their starting quarterback, drafted in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Los Angeles may start facing challenges with Simpson as its starting quarterback, and Garrett might not be inclined to stick around for a rebuild. Given that he’ll be 33 in a few years, he may prefer to go out on top with another shot at a Super Bowl contender.
Why the Bills Could be a Good Spot For Garrett
If Josh Allen is still the starting quarterback for the Bills in 2029, they will likely be Super Bowl contenders as long as he remains in his prime. Additionally, Buffalo could be a favorable destination for the Rams to consider trading Garrett in the coming years if they decide to pursue that option, since the Bills could be Super Bowl contenders and not in the NFC.
The Rams likely wouldn’t want to trade Garrett to an NFC team, just in case they end up rebuilding and don’t want to face him in the playoffs. This would mean the Rams would have to pursue a trade with an AFC team, and they can’t deal him to the Ravens, Steelers, or Bengals unless they’re willing to give up a 2029 first-round pick.
Los Angeles could still trade Garrett to the other 13 AFC teams, including the Browns, but not all of those teams will be contenders. This could leave around four or five teams as potential candidates for Garrett’s services.
