Yankees Make Trent Grisham Announcement During Blue Jays Game

The New York Yankees had to pull Trent Grisham from Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Yankees announced that Grisham was removed from the game after suffering an injury earlier in the game. The Yankees announced that Grisham exited after feeling discomfort legging out a bloop double in the second inning.

Despite the injury taking place in the second, it wasn’t until the fifth that Grisham was removed from the game. Spencer Jones replaced Grisham in center field as a defensive replacement.

However, Jones was on the on-deck circle in the bottom of the fourth to replace Grisham if he got up, but Paul Goldschmidt recorded the final out of the inning, which led to Jones coming in as a defensive replacement.

Yankees reporter Bryan Hoch of MLB.com noted on X that Grisham was moving gingerly after the double.

“Trent Grisham was moving gingerly after running out that second-inning double. Aaron Boone checked on him between innings. Staying in the game,” Hoch wrote.

Before being pulled, Grisham went 1-for-1 with a double, which was a good sign as his offense has been an issue this season, as he’s hitting .174 with 6 home runs and 27 RBIs.

Yankees Manager Has Confidence in Grisham

Grisham accepted his qualifying offer this offseason to return to the Yankees after a breakout season.

However, Grisham has struggled to begin the year, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone is confident he will turn it around.

“Trent’s in a pretty good spot overall, and even (May 11 against Baltimore) he walks in front of the Rice home run. He’s getting on base. He’s been incredibly unlucky, like that’s a real thing,” Boone said. …

“I’m watching him square balls up routinely. He’s gotta start finding some grass. With the number of guys we have off to a bit of a slow start, no thoughts of moving him right now.”

If Grisham can start hitting the balls harder and getting more slug, it will help the Yankees’ offense. And, it will help Grisham this offseason as he’s a pending free agent who’s in the midst of a down offensive season.

New York Was Eager to Play The Blue Jays

The Yankees were eliminated by the Blue Jays in the playoffs, so when Toronto came to the Bronx for four games, New York was eager for the challenge.

Every game is very important, but there are situations where we should lock in — not that we aren’t locked in, but being aware that there’s maybe a little more to it,” Yankees starter Cam Schlittler said. “I think this is one of those series. The same with Tampa (this weekend) as well. We went to their place and easily could have taken two out of three. We didn’t. So, it’s frustrating. I think we’re in a good position to make a good run here and take these two series as a momentum shift.”

Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm, meanwhile, said New York had something to prove against Toronto.

“Especially losing to them in the playoffs, we gotta have a different mindset when it comes to them,” Chisholm said. “Every time we see them, we have that feeling. At least I do, for sure. I know a couple of other guys in the clubhouse have that feeling of, like, we owe you something. We’re gonna show you what we’ve got.”
