Victor Wembanyama Sends Warning About Oklahoma City Thunder Ahead of Western Conference Finals

The San Antonio Spurs are headed to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017 after defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 139-109 in Game 6 on Friday night. Behind strong performances from Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox, and Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio closed out the series in dominant fashion and now prepares for a matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Wembanyama finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and three blocks as the Spurs overwhelmed Minnesota on both ends of the floor. The victory also continued San Antonio’s surge after the team won seven consecutive playoff games and established itself as one of the league’s most balanced postseason groups.

The Spurs now face a much different challenge against the defending champion Thunder, with Game 1 scheduled for Monday at Paycom Center.

Following the series-clinching win, Wembanyama addressed the upcoming Western Conference Finals matchup and acknowledged the challenge Oklahoma City presents.

“And we know it’s going to be a whole different series and totally other challenges,” Wembanyama said. “This is a team that knows how to play basketball. They know their stuff.”

The Spurs star added that preparation will immediately become the focus before Game 1.

“And we’re going to see,” Wembanyama said. “We’re going to re-watch all their games and do the scouting and try to execute over there on game one.”

San Antonio enters the series after producing one of its most complete performances of the postseason against Minnesota. Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 32 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists in Game 6, while Fox added 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Rookie Dylan Harper also scored 15 points as the Spurs’ backcourt trio combined to fuel the offense.

“What we’re walking into on Monday is a different animal,” Harper said after the win. “The experience is great for all of us. But we’ve just got to have the mindset of we’re going to keep the foot on the gas no matter what.”

Castle, Fox, and Harper combined for nine made 3-pointers during the victory as San Antonio recorded the third-highest scoring playoff game in franchise history.

Fox credited the team’s rotational structure and guard depth for helping create offensive balance around Wembanyama.

“The way our rotations work, at all times we have two of us out there,” Fox said. “We’re all able to play off one another. We can all get to the basket. We all make our open shots.”

While the Spurs’ offense dominated headlines after the Game 6 blowout, Wembanyama pointed to the team’s defensive connectivity as one of the biggest reasons for the postseason success.

“This series was probably the most fun I’ve had on defense,” Wembanyama said after eliminating Minnesota. “Like everybody was connected… And that’s the most fun I had on defense.”

San Antonio consistently disrupted Minnesota throughout the series, using Wembanyama’s rim protection alongside aggressive perimeter defense from Castle, Fox, and the rest of the rotation.

Wembanyama also praised Castle’s composure during the closeout game after the rookie guard delivered one of the best performances of his young career.

“The way this team is built, they were trying to take me away from the rim and just grab me,” Wembanyama said. “[Castle] was amazing. Just the composure to make the late choice and to push the defense in as far as they can go to take care of our strengths, he was great.”

Castle became the fifth player in Spurs history to record at least 30 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in a playoff clinching game, joining Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu Ginobili, and George Gervin.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson also praised Castle’s approach following the win.

“His temperament and disposition led to him having the right approach and playing the right way,” Johnson said. “When they have the right approach and play with the fundamentals needed at this level to execute, their talent can take it to another level.”

Now, San Antonio turns its focus toward Oklahoma City, with Wembanyama emphasizing recovery, preparation, and discipline ahead of the conference finals.
