The Pittsburgh Steelers seemed to have taken a big step towards bringing Aaron Rodgers back to town for the 2026 campaign last week. Reports emerged that Rodgers was set to visit the Steelers and put pen to paper on his contract for the upcoming season, which would have brought an end to one of the biggest sagas of the offseason.
Instead, that never ended up happening, leading folks everywhere to wonder what was going on with Rodgers and Pittsburgh. As it turns out, Rodgers wasn’t visiting the Steelers during his trip to Pennsylvania, raising concerns that he may not be returning to Pittsburgh, despite all the signs seemingly pointing to him doing so for the past few months.
Aaron Rodgers Reportedly Did Not Visit the Steelers Last Week
For the second straight offseason, the Steelers have found themselves stuck playing a waiting game with Rodgers. The legendary quarterback has once again taken his sweet time deciding whether or not he will return for the 2026 campaign, and while rumors have continually suggested that he is going to play next season, nothing has been finalized to this point.
Considering how Pittsburgh has a less-than-inspiring depth chart of Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Drew Allar at quarterback currently, the team has clearly put all of its eggs in Rodgers’ basket. If he decides to call it a career and retire, the Steelers’ hopes of competing for a playoff spot would effectively be destroyed.
It seemed like Rodgers was trending towards officially returning for the new season last week, but nothing ever came of his reported meeting with the Steelers. That’s because, according to a new report, Rodgers never met with the team, and taking things a step further, he has never given Pittsburgh any sort of indication that he will be suiting up in 2026.
“Despite reports to the contrary, veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers did travel to Pittsburgh but not to finalize any contract with the Steelers or even have any interaction with anyone in the franchise, according to sources with knowledge of the situation,” Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom reported. “Rodgers has not given the coaching staff or front office any indication that he is going to play in 2026.”
Steelers Need Aaron Rodgers to Make a Decision on 2026 Soon
GettySteelers get major update on Aaron Rodgers.
The Steelers know that they have put themselves in a precarious position with Rodgers, but that doesn’t seem to bother them for whatever reason. Even if Rodgers does play in 2026, Pittsburgh doesn’t have a true long-term answer at the position, so at some point, it is going to have to find a proper replacement for the future Hall of Famer.
In a surprising turn, that decision could be one the team is forced to make sooner rather than later. If Rodgers were to opt to retire, the Steelers could pivot and bring another quarterback to town, but they are running out of time to make that sort of move. The team needs some sort of clarity from Rodgers, but it doesn’t seem like anything of that nature will be coming anytime soon.
