The Royal Family’s Garden Party Guests’ Mistakes Include ‘Attention Seekers’ in ‘Short Dresses’ and ‘Overly Revealing Necklines’

It’s that time of year again when <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/royal-family/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>the royal family hosts a series of garden parties, with three at <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/rodents-and-asbestos-are-a-few-reasons-some-royals-dislike-buckingham-palace.html/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Buckingham Palace and one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland.

More than 30,000 people are invited to the garden parties each year. Guests are nominated by a network of sponsors and celebrated for their efforts in helping others. After informal meetings and chats with the royals, guests are invited to enjoy tea and explore the palace gardens.

There is a special dress code for the parties. Men typically wear morning dress or suits, and women wear day dresses with hats or fascinators. National dress and uniforms are also common. But some partygoers have shown up in the wrong thing, and that can be viewed as “disrespectful.”

Here’s what a fashion expert has revealed about that, plus how much the royals’ party garden outfits actually cost.

<a href=”https://www.nickedetv.com/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Nick Ede is a UK-based brand and culture expert and public relations specialist with over 20 years of experience across media, fashion, and entertainment. He is a regular commentator on television and in the press. Alongside his media work, Nick runs a successful PR agency and is a dedicated charity campaigner, having raised significant funds and awareness for stroke charities through his initiative Style For Stroke. He was also once close friends with <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/meghan-markle-getting-residual-checks-suits-surprise-streaming-success.html/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Meghan Markle.

Speaking on behalf of <a href=”https://www.cafecasino.lv/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Cafe Casino, Ede told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “For the senior royals, a garden party outfit including the dress or suit, hat, shoes, and accessories could easily represent an investment of anywhere between $3,800 and $19,000 or more, depending on whether the piece is bespoke or ready-to-wear.

“A Philip Treacy hat alone could be $1,800 to $3,800. However, this needs to be understood in context: These are often pieces worn multiple times over years or decades, and many are created in partnership with British designers who benefit enormously from the royal association. The cost-per-wear across a lifetime of public service makes these far more defensible investments than a celebrity wearing something once for a red carpet.”

The mistakes Garden Party guests make with too-short, cleavage-baring outfits

Ede spoke about some of the major fashion steps guests can make and have made over the years when attending the event as well.

“The biggest mistakes I see are going too short, too casual, too busy, or too attention-seeking,” he shared. “Mini skirts, trainers, overly revealing necklines, and anything that looks like nightclub attire are all instant missteps.”

Ede added that there are certain colors that should never be worn to a garden party, either, stating, “The one golden rule is to avoid white. That’s reserved for the royals and bridal occasions. Wearing all black can also feel too funereal for a joyful outdoor celebration. Very neon or electric shades can look jarring in a garden setting, and anything too matchy-matchy with the lawn pure emerald green can sometimes disappear into the background.”

According to the expert, some attendees also run the risk of being over or underdressed, “Going too casual certainly reads as disrespectful of the occasion. Overdressing is less of an issue at garden parties than underdressing, but arriving in a full ballgown or an outrageous theatrical hat would also feel misjudged.

“Fashion is absolutely part of the experience. Guests are very aware of it, but it should enhance the occasion, not overshadow it. It should reflect your personality, but let your personality come first, not your clothing.” The line is confidence versus showboating. You want your outfit to speak quietly rather than shout. A gorgeous hat, a beautifully cut dress, a rich colour, a subtle print all of these say something wonderful about your sense of style without demanding to be the centre of the room.”
