76ers Player Takes Wild Shot at Knicks’ Jalen Brunson After Game 1

There was already enough edge in this series after one game, and Madison Square Garden only turned it up.

The Knicks ran wild in Game 1, the crowd smelled blood early, and Jalen Brunson looked completely in control of the night.

From the Sixers side, frustration showed up fast. Sometimes that comes out in scheme talk, sometimes in film-room clichés. This time, it came out a little differently, and it made Brunson the center of the conversation again.

Kelly Oubre Jr. and Jalen Brunson become the story after Game 1

After Philadelphia’s 137-98 loss to the Knicks in Game 1 of the 2026 Eastern Conference semifinals, Kelly Oubre Jr. offered a line that instantly caught fire when asked about defending Jalen Brunson.

Oubre said, “He has a big head. It’s definitely tough to guard him with his head *flailing motion* doing all that.”

He did not stop there; he also gave Brunson real credit for how he opened the series. As Oubre put it, “He came out and started the series.”

That part is the piece that matters most on the floor. Brunson was brilliant from the jump, scoring 35 points in just 31 minutes as New York grabbed a 1-0 lead. He shot 12-of-18 from the field, hit 3-of-6 from deep, and went 8-for-8 at the line. By halftime, he already had 27 points and the game was basically gone.

For all the joking in Oubre’s quote, the Sixers know the problem is bigger than one soundbite. Brunson got where he wanted, dictated pace, and punished nearly every defensive look Philadelphia tried. Oubre saw some of that matchup himself, but this was more than one defender losing a battle. It was the Knicks’ offense putting the whole defense into rotation and letting Brunson pick it apart.

Josh Hart had the perfect response

If you know this Knicks group, you know they were never going to treat Oubre’s comment like some serious insult. Josh Hart answered it exactly how you would expect, with a grin and a little needle of his own.

Hart said, “I never noticed it, trust me if I did I probably would have copied the same hairstyle so maybe I would have got a couple more buckets or something like that but it’s an interesting analysis.”

He kept going, and the second part landed just as well. Hart added, “I felt like that was something that was like very well documented so you know I don’t think that was any any shocker when he said that one.”

That response fit the mood around the Knicks perfectly. They were loose because they earned the right to be loose. Brunson had already done the hard part, shredding Philadelphia’s coverages and forcing the Sixers to search for answers that did not come.

From a New York point of view, that is the real takeaway. Oubre’s line was funny, sure, but it also sounded like the kind of thing players say when Brunson has already bent the game to his will. The Sixers tried size, wings, switches, and different matchups. None of it changed the rhythm.

That is why this quote stuck. It was not really about Brunson’s head. It was about the headache he gave Philadelphia, and if Game 1 is any sign, the Knicks have every reason to feel good about where this series is headed.
