Boston Red Sox Announce Big Roster Move Due To New Pitching Injury

Injuries have stalled what was supposed to be the anticipated matchup between Cy Young pitcher Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers, and 23-year-old ace pitcher Payton Tolle of the Boston Red Sox.

Earlier this afternoon, ESPN’s Jeff Passan announced that Skubal was scratched from today’s game against the Red Sox, and would be receiving surgery  to remove loose bodies from his elbow.

Now less than three hours away from the first pitch, another announcement regarding a pitching injury has been made. This time, on the Red Sox side of things.

Relief Pitcher Danny Coulombe Goes to IL, Red Sox Activate Prospect Alec Gamboa

Boston Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo shared on X that relief pitcher Danny Coulombe is set to hit the injury list with cervical spasms, with 29-year-old pitching prospect Alec Gamboa scheduled to take his place.

Coulombe started off the season strong, but in last seven games the left-handed pitcher has a 7.71 ERA, with only three strikeouts, in 4.2 innings pitched. The 36-year-old has entered his 12th MLB season, and first with the Red Sox.

The lefty set to take his place is Alec Gamboa, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019.

In December, Gamboa signed a minor-league deal with Boston containing a mobility clause that could be triggered if not promoted by May 1. Gamboa decided to exercise the clause, which added him to the Red Sox’s 40-man and 26-man active roster.

Gamboa’s call up is the first for the 29-year-old southpaw. He had been working out of the Triple-A rotation, posting a 6.23 ERA and 1.69 WHIP across 13 frames for Worcester.

In addition to the bruised pitching staff of the Boston Red Sox, they made an on paper move along with the announcement regarding Danny Coulombe and Alec Gamboa.

The Red Sox transferred Sandoval (biceps/elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL while working his way back from the June 2024 internal brace surgery. The left-handed pitcher hit a setback in late April during a rehab assignment.
