New York Yankees Make Anthony Volpe Decision As Return Looms

Anthony Volpe is currently on a rehab assignment as he continues to work his way back after offseason shoulder surgery.

As the New York Yankees are one of the best teams in MLB to start 2026, they are still set to get more reinforcements like Anthony Volpe, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Rodon. On Tuesday, before the Yankees took the field against the Texas Rangers, the team announced an Anthony Volpe decision.

New York Yankees’ X account wrote (on April 28): “Today, the Yankees transferred the rehab assignment of INF Anthony Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to Double-A Somerset.”

While it may appear that this is a ‘demotion’ decision for Anthony Volpe, it’s likely a roster reassignment move for other reasons.

New York’s Triple-A team, Scranton Wilkes-Barre, is likely heading out on a lengthy road trip, so Volpe needs to get some more work in, as it’s expected he will make his season debut soon.

The Yankees are 19-10, and look like a true threat in the American League. It will be interesting to see how Aaron Boone manages Volpe when he returns, and what his reception is like in the Bronx. New York is set to finish up the series with the Rangers on Wednesday, and then Volpe may return on Thursday.

In other Yankees farm system news, Gerrit Cole is expected to make a rehab start with Somerset on Wednesday.

Anthony Volpe has played three full seasons with the Yankees. He’s struck out 150+ times in all three seasons.

In 2025, he hit .212 with 19 HR, 72 RBI, and 114 hits. Aaron Boone is currently rolling with Jose Caballero at shortstop, who is hitting the ball very well as of late. It brings up the question of whether Anthony Volpe slots in as the everyday shortstop immediately upon return.

@FiresideYankees: “Anthony Volpe is expected to re-join the Yankees between Wednesday and Thursday, per Francys Romero. He will play games at Double-A Somerset before returning to the team.”
