Toronto Blue Jays Trade 3-Year MLB Player to Dodgers During Red Sox Game

The Toronto Blue Jays are 12-16 this season, and are currently taking on the Boston Red Sox in a three-game series. During Toronto’s game with the Red Sox, the team announced a notable trade.

Per the Blue Jays social media account: “OFFICIAL: We’ve traded INF Tyler Fitzgerald to the Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations.”

Tyler Fitzgerald has spent the last three seasons with the San Francisco Giants and has yet to appear in a MLB game this season.

Considering that Tyler Fitzgerald has an option remaining in his contract, he could begin his tenure in the Dodgers organization in Triple-A.

To make room for Fitzgerald, the Dodgers transferred Landon Knack to the 60-Day IL.

Tyler Fitzgerald is a three-year MLB veteran who has played his entire career with the Giants before this season. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB draft by San Francisco, and Fitzgerald debuted in 2023. He’s played in fewer than 100 games in all three years of his career.

In 178 games, he has a .252 average with 21 home runs, 31 doubles, and a lifetime OPS+ of 109. He actually racked up 2.7 bWAR in 2024 with the Giants after hitting .280 with 15 home runs in 96 games. However, 2025 was harder for Tyler Fitzgerald, as he hit .217 with four home runs in 70+ games. He’s not a player who will hit for a lot of power, but if Fitzgerald doesn’t hit for a high average, his production becomes less valuable.

The Dodgers were able to trade for Fitzgerald after he was optioned by Toronto and then designated by the Blue Jays a week later.

Well, if the Toronto Blue Jays didn’t utilize Tyler Fitzgerald in any way, it’s unlikely he’ll see much time in the Dodgers actual lineup.

He likely starts in Triple-A, and the Dodgers will judge from there what they want to do with him. However, the fact that the Dodgers are trading for him makes it a good organizational piece, or it could signal that a Dodgers depth infielder may be slightly hampered with an injury.

Either way, it will be interesting to see how the Dodgers manage his status. The early reports suggest that Fitzgerald will be headed to Oklahoma City (Triple-A affiliate).
