Austin Reaves Return Update Raises Question for Lakers — And It’s a Big One

The Los Angeles Lakers could be getting one of their most important pieces back just as the series tightens — but how Austin Reaves returns may matter just as much as whether he plays.

After missing roughly four weeks with a Grade 2 oblique strain, Reaves is now trending toward a Game 5 return against the Houston Rockets.

“Los Angeles Lakers star Austin Reaves is optimistic to return to action in Game 5 against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night after missing about four weeks with a Grade 2 oblique strain, sources tell ESPN,” NBA insider Shams Charania reported Tuesday morning. “Reaves will be a game-time decision for the third consecutive contest.”

Austin Reaves Nearing Return — But Role Still Unclear

Reaves has been on the verge of returning for multiple games now, but the final step — confidence in his body — has kept him sidelined.

The timing aligns with the typical recovery window for a Grade 2 oblique strain, an injury that impacts core strength, balance and shooting motion — critical elements for a guard who thrives on rhythm and control.

Even if Reaves is cleared for Game 5, his role is unlikely to mirror his usual workload immediately.

Lakers insider Jovan Buha has indicated the team could ease him back into action.

“I do expect him to come off the bench,” Buha said on his Buha’s Block podcast. “And I would expect him to be on some sort of minutes restriction if he is able to return in Game 5.”

That could place Reaves in an approximate 18-to-20-minute role initially, giving him time to regain conditioning while still contributing in key stretches.

Lakers Offense Needs Reaves’ Stability

The urgency behind Reaves’ potential return became clear in Game 4.

The Lakers’ offense unraveled in a 115-96 loss, with turnovers and inconsistent ball-handling derailing any rhythm. LeBron James himself called his performance “unacceptable” after committing eight turnovers.

Without Reaves, the Lakers have lacked a steady secondary creator — someone capable of organizing possessions, spacing the floor, and attacking off the dribble.

His return would immediately address multiple issues:

  • Ball security and decision-making
  • Secondary scoring behind LeBron
  • Shot creation in half-court sets
  • Late-game composure

Even in a limited role, those contributions could swing momentum back toward Los Angeles.

Bronny James Emerges as Rotation X-Factor

GettyBronny James has shown growth in limited playoff minutes, creating a new rotation question for the Lakers with Austin Reaves nearing a return.

Reaves’ return, however, introduces a new complication.

While he has been sidelined, Bronny James has quietly carved out a role in the rotation.

The rookie has shown steady growth, averaging 5.0 points and 2.0 assists over the last two games while shooting 40% from three-point range — a noticeable jump from his regular-season production.

Even in Game 4’s blowout loss, Bronny contributed five points and four assists in 15 minutes, flashing improved confidence and defensive energy.

Buha acknowledged that progress has made the rotation decision less straightforward.

“Bronny has been playing better,” he said. “But obviously Austin is a much better player than Bronny. So I don’t know if you give all those minutes to Austin or you still keep Bronny in, maybe in a one-shift role.”

Minutes Distribution Could Decide Game 5 Impact

Rather than removing Bronny entirely, the Lakers may opt for a more balanced approach.

Minutes could be trimmed across multiple players — including Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard and Rui Hachimura — to accommodate Reaves while keeping the rotation fresh.

That strategy could prove critical in a closeout scenario.

Game 5 tips off Wednesday, April 29 at 7:00 PM PT (10:00 PM ET) on ESPN, with the Lakers holding a 3-1 series lead.

Reaves’ return won’t just be about adding talent — it will test how quickly the Lakers can reintegrate a key piece without disrupting the rhythm that has carried them to the brink of advancing.

And in a series that suddenly feels less secure after Game 4, that balance could determine everything.
