Red Sox Named Top Trade Fit for 3-Time All-Star Slugger

The Boston Red Sox have had an ugly start to the 2026 season. At the time of this writing, they are at the very bottom of the American League East standings with a 9-17 record. They have also lost each of their last four games, so they are only continuing to struggle as the season carries on.

When noting that the Red Sox finished last season with an 89-73 record and made the playoffs, they entered this campaign with the expectation of taking another step in the right direction. However, the Red Sox are instead heading in the wrong direction during the early stages of this season.

With the Red Sox struggling so significantly, they should strongly consider making some additions to their roster to try to get things back on track. They desperately need another power hitter in the middle of their lineup, as their offense has simply not been good enough.

Due to this, the Red Sox have now been named as a top potential landing spot for one of baseball’s biggest trade candidates.

Boston Red Sox Named a Top Landing Spot for Astros Star Slugger Yordan Alvarez

In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Zachary D. Rymer discussed a handful of potential landing spots for Houston Astros star Yordan Alvarez. With the Red Sox needing help on offense, it is not surprising in the slightest that they were among the teams listed as a potential trade destination for Alvarez by Rymer.

“True, the last thing the Red Sox need is another left-handed hitter who only fits at DH or in left field. It’s hard enough to get at-bats for Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida. Rather, the issue here is how badly this offense needs a slugger. It has produced only 13 home runs, tying for last in MLB with the Giants. And there might not be a ton more power to be squeezed out of their incumbents,” Rymer wrote about Alvarez and the Red Sox.

While the Red Sox now have 15 home runs on the season, that is still incredibly low at this juncture of the campaign. Because of this, it would make a lot of sense if they tried to swing a deal with the Astros for Alvarez.

Alvarez has been on fire for the Astros this season, despite them being at the bottom of the American League West standings. In 27 games this season with Houston, he has 11 home runs, 26 RBIs, and a .357 batting average. He also hit over 30 home runs in four straight seasons from 2021 to 2024, so there is no question that he would be a major addition to Boston’s roster if acquired.

Red Sox Need to Make a Big Move to Save Their Season

Whether it is Alvarez or another impactful hitter, it is clear that the Red Sox need to make a big move if they hope to get their campaign back on track. The clock is ticking, so if the opportunity for them to land a star power hitter arises, they should strongly consider it.

Alvarez would be an outstanding pickup for the Red Sox, and it will be interesting to see if they pursue him from here.
