San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama’s postseason coming-out party came to a screeching halt in the second quarter of last night’s loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Wembanyama, 22, was diagnosed with a concussion after taking a frightening tumble early in the second quarter.
The Spurs star attempted a spinning drive as he looked to convert a layup over Blazers guard Jrue Holiday.
Wembanyama then lost his footing and went crashing to the ground in a jarring fashion. Replay showed Wembanyama falling face-first to the floor. Immediately upon impact, he shut his eyes and appeared to have lost consciousness.
A few moments later, Wembanyama sat up and appeared visibly dazed and like he just snapped back from blacking out.
Wembanyama got up on his feet under his own power and jogged back to the locker room.
Spurs Receive New Victor Wembanyama Update After Game 2 Loss
The night was going well. So had the last few days.
The Spurs took Game 1 in convincing fashion behind Wembanyama’s striking playoff debut. He logged 35 points and cashed five of his six shots from the 3-point line.
Two days later, before Game 2 got underway, Wembanyama was handed the Defensive Player of the Year award, for which he received a unanimous vote.
The smiles didn’t last long thereafter.
GettyNEW YORK, NEW YORK – MARCH 01: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs reacts during the first quarter of the game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on March 01, 2026 in New York City.
Looking ahead to Game 3 of the first round, Wembanyama must stay in concussion protocol for at least 48 hours from the time of injury. If all goes well, he’ll be able to play in the pivotal Game 3 in Portland.
If Wembanyama isn’t able to clear the necessary steps in the protocol before Friday, he’ll miss the game — and potentially the next one after that.
On “NBA Today,” ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania delivered the latest update on Wembanyama.
“I’m told Victor Wembanyama did report to the Spurs facility this morning,” Charania said, “and his status is uncertain for Game 3. I am told that Victor Wembanyama is hopeful to travel with the team on Thursday to Portland, but he and the team won’t know for sure until then.
“Right now he’s in the concussion protocol and that means he cannot participate in unrestricted activities for at least 48 hours, so that would be Thursday night. But he could do some gradual, light work starting tonight if his symptoms don’t worsen. … The Spurs are taking this very much day-by-day with Wemby.”
Can Spurs Hold Down the Fort if Their Star is Sidelined?
It is safe to say the Blazers captured some serious momentum after last night’s win, which tied the first round series at one game apiece.
Not only did they expunge San Antonio’s home court advantage, they have a win in their back pockets heading back to Portland, where the Blazers won the sixth-most home games of any team in the Western Conference this season.
A win in Game 3 would deliver a serious boost to the Blazers and a major blow to the Spurs, especially if Wembanyama is still out nursing a concussion.
The Spurs have gone 12-6 without Wembanyama this season — but that was in the regular season. The already inexperienced Spurs will have an enormous mountain to climb if their best player is unable to suit up for Game 3 or even Game 4.
The next game in the series tips off at 7:30 p.m. in Moda Center on Friday night.
