Report: LIV Golf Future in Doubt After NYC Executive Meeting

The future of LIV Golf has once again become one of the hottest topics in professional golf, following reports of a sudden and somewhat mysterious executive meeting in New York City. While the league has been no stranger to controversy and speculation since its inception, the latest wave of rumors feels different.

At the center of the buzz is a report from Telegraph Sport suggesting that LIV executives were called into a high-level meeting, with talk of a possible “seismic” announcement looming. That phrasing alone has been enough to ignite widespread debate across the golf world, from fans to insiders, about whether the league is preparing for a major pivot, or something far more final.

A League Built on Disruption Faces Uncertainty

Since its launch, LIV Golf has positioned itself as a disruptive force, challenging traditional structures dominated by organizations like the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the league attracted top talent with massive contracts and introduced a team-based format aimed at modernizing the sport.

But disruption comes with instability. The very elements that made LIV compelling have also fueled skepticism about its long-term viability. Now, with players reportedly left in the dark about the league’s immediate future, that skepticism appears to be intensifying.

Mixed Signals and Mounting Speculation

Adding to the confusion are a series of unusual developments leading up to the meeting. Reports of technical issues, such as a non-functioning power board, were cited as the reason for canceled press conferences earlier in the week. While plausible on the surface, the timing has raised eyebrows, especially given the broader context of uncertainty surrounding the league.

Meanwhile, social media has amplified the speculation. Golf insider Ryan French, known for his well-sourced insights through Monday Q Info, hinted at a potentially major development. In a cryptic post, he suggested that a “bombshell announcement” regarding LIV’s future could be imminent, later adding in a live discussion that he had heard the league might even be shutting down.

“I think everybody should probably stay near their phones … I have some pretty good sources and I’ve heard that some other people have sources that LIV is shutting down,” French said on X Spaces. “I’ve got everything from, and these are people that I trust, that you guys know. Players didn’t get paid today, power went out because the bill wasn’t paid, employees didn’t get paid. Stuff like that.

“There is definitely a lot going on … Things are not good.”

According to the New York Post, Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee suggested the rumors may not be far-fetched, pointing to the league’s format, low viewership and reported financial losses.

“Given that the product was so ill-conceived and ended up being worse than anyone could have imagined,” Chamblee said.

“With shotgun starts, initially 54 holes, a team concept that was nothing but laughable and tournaments that meant and continue to mean nothing, and such a paltry number of viewers, losing billions along the way – would it surprise anyone if the Saudis came to their senses and finally euthanized the whole lame-brained tour?”

Players in Limbo as Events Continue

For now, the show goes on – at least on the course. LIV players are reportedly preparing to compete at Club de Golf Chapultepec, continuing the scheduled season despite the off-course uncertainty.

With 57 players involved and millions of dollars at stake, the implications of any major announcement would be enormous. Contracts, team structures, and the broader ecosystem of professional golf could all be affected. For players who made the jump to LIV, often at the expense of eligibility in other tours, the stakes are particularly high.

“That’s the thing that’s up in the air. I’m not sure they’re going to tee it up this week – maybe this week and that’s it,” French said. “I think you’re going to see some pretty lengthy stories coming out from pretty long-time – New York Times-type stuff – out pretty soon.

“I had it this afternoon from a very [reliable source] and I’ve been working it all day. And yeah, I’m 99.99% confident. I know there was an email sent, I’ve talked to some agents, I’ve talked to a player, yeah, I think it’s happening.”
