Thunder and rain could roll in for Cubs’ Opening Day at Wrigley Field

Anyone heading to Wrigley Field for the Cubs season opener on Thursday afternoon should be ready to spend some time watching the ground crew roll the tarp onto the field.

The National Weather Service says rain, hail and thunderstorms could hit the city sometime during the Cubs’ game against the Washington Nationals. Temperatures could start in the mid 50s then fall into the mid 40s. There is an 80% chance of rain.

The weather won’t be an issue for South Side fans heading to Milwaukee to see the White Sox start the season on the road against the Brewers, thanks to American Family Field’s retractable roof.

The Cubs-Nationals game is scheduled to start at 1:20 p.m. Matthew Boyd will start for the Cubs and Cade Cavalli is going for the Nationals.

Former Cubs great Anthony Rizzo will throw out the ceremonial first pitch as the club starts the year celebrating the 10th anniversary of its World Series championship and the franchise’s 150th anniversary.
